Domestic violence: 10 remanded as Anambra sets up family court

The Anambra State Government has set up a special family court to tackle issues of increasing domestic violence in the state.

This is following the reported high rate of domestic violence, which one of them led to the suspension of the Transition Committee Chairman of Nnewi North Local Government Area, Mr Mbazulike Iloka, as a result of the controversial circumstances trailing the death of his wife, Chidiebere.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Ify Obinabo, while speaking to the United Business Women And Farmers Association in her office on Monday, declared that the state government has zero tolerance for domestic violence.

Obinabo pointed out that the killing of one’s spouse is an abomination, which the ministry would continue to ensure that it was put under check.

She further explained that the Family Court that was set up by the government already had 10 cases pending with nine suspects remanded at the awaiting trial section and one granted bail.

She said, “We have 10 cases of domestic violence at our Family Court and out of that number, nine suspects were remanded at the awaiting trial section while one was granted bail.

“But this is not in Anambra State alone and our state has one of the lowest cases of death through domestic violence and this recent one makes it the fifth case.”

In her earlier address, the National President of the association, Mrs Nkiru Nwagbo, said, “We call on you to help us in building capacity of our members through our various training programmes.

“We have well over 8,000 members in Anambra State who believe in our capacity to resolve their problems through empowerment programmes.”

She commended the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, for taking drastic action against the Transition Committee Chairman who is being accused of killing his wife.

“We also wish to extend our hands of friendship to you in mounting public enlightenment campaigns in the promotion of these ideals engrained in the vision if your Ministry,” she added.

  • IG raises alarm over plot to attack public facilities, orders raids, show of force

IG raises alarm over plot to attack public facilities, orders raids, show of force

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Usman Alkali yesterday raised the alarm over a plot by criminal elements to attack public institutions and structures across the country.

He ordered tight security surveillance on schools, hospitals, health facilities and other critical infrastructures to forestall any emergency.

The IG also ordered regular patrols, stop and search, raids and show of force by tactical commanders to clamp down on pockets of crime in some states.

Emphasising the urgency and importance of the new security measures, Alkali charged police officers to exhibit courage and serve with compassion in line with the policing theme of the Buhari Administration.

He said policemen should be on the offensive, adding that they should take the battle to the doorsteps of criminals.

For some years now, the country has been battling with insurgency perpetrated by the Boko Haram sect, ISWAP and other terrorist groups.

Terrorists have been on the prowl, invading schools and abducting students for ransom.

They have also attacked churches and mosques, the latest being the bombing of St. Mary Catholic Church, Owo, in Ondo State, leaving over 40 worshippers dead.

Almost five months ago, a train was attacked on Abuja-Kaduna Road. Not all the abducted passengers have regained their freedom.

Apart from the invasion of correctional centres to free inmates, insurgents have also attacked the Brigade of Guards in Abuja, killing some officers.

In the Southeast, criminals have disrupted socio-economic activities while illegally enforcing sit-at-home, attacking police stations and destroying Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) facilities.

Alkali gave the directive on increased surveillance when reviewing the general security situation, following reports from commands and formations across the country.

The police boss directed strategic police managers at various levels to prioritise the use of intelligence gathering networks, particularly traditional/local intelligence, to locate criminal hideouts and flush them out before they strike.

According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IG also charged all officers and men to be on the offensive by taking the fight against crime to the doorposts of suspected criminal elements, including bushes and uncompleted buildings.

He said policemen should profile them and charge those found wanting to court.

He said: “Against the backdrop of this development, Nigerians are hereby urged to cooperate with the Police as many police operatives will be seen at strategic areas, routes and communities, in order to suppress the antics and criminal activities of men of the underworld.

“The IG has, however, warned officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force to be civil, professional and humane in the course of discharging their duties.

“The IG has, therefore, reiterated his commitment to the protection of lives and property of well-meaning members of the public by decimating the activities of rogue criminal elements, particularly those who target schools, hospitals, and other critical national infrastructure, in a bid to strike fear into the hearts of good citizens in the country.”

  • Village head to die by hanging over death of ‘witchcraft suspect’

Village head to die by hanging over death of ‘witchcraft suspect’

Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in Uyo has sentenced the Village Head of Efen Ibom in Ika Local Government Area of the State, Chief Essien Matthew Odiong to death by hanging for murder.

The 82 year-old convict,  who is married to 12 wives with 60 children, was standing trial on a four-count charge of conspiracy, directing unlawful trial by ordeal, stealing of motorcycle and murder of the owner, and a member of his community, Udoma Akpan Udo Ubom.

Delivering  judgment on the matter, the  Court presided over by Justice Edem Akpan, found the accused guilty of murder of Udo Ubom  by injecting some chemical substance on him, leading to his death on 26th April, 2017.

The late Ubom was accused by his brothers of being a wizard and was reported to the Village Head, who brought him before the Efen Clan Council, where the deceased was given an oath to swear that he was not a wizard.

The Court held that “having sensed the consequences of his criminal activity, the monarch escaped from the Village since 2017 and returned in 2019, when he was arrested by the Police.”

The trial Judge also held that since “the accused had voluntarily admitted that he sat at Efen Clan Council with five other village heads and members of the Clan Council to try the deceased on the allegation of witchcraft, the law has relieved the prosecution of the burden to prove the offense of conspiracy.”

He held that “the admission of the process of trial and the decision of Efen Clan Council to administer oath on the deceased, has logically brought to the conclusion that a plastic bath on the head of the late Udoma Akpan Udo Ubom and injecting some chemical susbtance through a syringe into his buttocks by the village head, caused the death of the deceased.”

Justice Akpan sentenced the Village Head to death by hanging for murder, seven years imprisonment with hard labour for directing unlawful trial by ordeal and three years imprisonment for conspiracy with others now at large.

Before he was sentenced, the convicted Village Head, popularly known as “Kill and Bury” pleaded for leniency, asking the Court to show him mercy.

Unknown gunmen kidnap Police DCO in Abia

Gunmen have kidnapped the Divisional Crime Officer,DCO, Isuochi Police station in Umunneochi council area of Abia State, simply identified as DSP Dickson.

The policeman was said to have been abducted in broad day light three days go, Thursday, August 10, in the area while other policemen escaped by whiskers in the attack.

Some policemen who pleaded anonymity said that the morale of officers in the area has gone down since the kidnap of the DCO who is described as a ‘tough cop.’

It was gathered that the Police authorities in the state had deployed all the tactical Squads of the State Police Command to rescue the victim and his abductors, all to no avail.

The unsuccessful search by the tactical team is said to have fueled speculation about the safety of the top policeman.

The policemen urged Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu to put more efforts to check the rising kidnapping incidents in the Umunneochi/ Isuikwuato area and liaise with the police hierarchy to reorganize the police in the state.

It was further gathered that the family of the kidnapped DCO has paid an undisclosed amount of ransom demanded by his abductors, yet the DCO is still held captive.

The policemen said; “DSP Dickson hails from Enugu State. He has a health challenge and barely has just a few months to retire from the Nigeria Police. The police authorities have deployed the tactical team who went and combed the area,to no avail. They have also sent some of us,but we are aware that they have not done enough to rescue him.

“The People of the state have complained about the rising rate of insecurity in the state and demanding for redeployment of the Commissioner of Police in the state. Everyday they say Abia is peaceful and secure, but kidnappers are having a field day abducting and killing people.

“They’re saying all those things because we the affected police officers are not speaking up. There are serious security challenges all over the state, especially the Umunneochi/Isuikwuato axis. I don’t understand why the authorities are playing politics with reality. Why can’t they accept that there’s a problem and call for help? What’s happening all over the country is also here, but our own is suppressed and underreported.”

Police Public Relations Officer,Abia state Command, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna ,was yet to respond to text and call placed on his mobile number ,as at the time of filing this report.
