Fake medical doctor defrauds 25 PoS operators

Men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Ekiti State, have arrested a 36-year-old man, Ayodeji Ademiluyi, for allegedly parading himself as a medical doctor and defrauding Point-of-Sale operators in the state capital.
The state Commandant of the agency, Mr John Fayemi, said the suspect defrauded the operators by sending fake alerts after collecting cash from them.

He said the suspect used an application on his phone, which also triggered a call from his fake hospital that a patient needed his attention.

“The PoS operator will then consider his status as a doctor and allow him to go. Later, the PoS operator will discover that he or she has been duped,” Fayemi added.

The state NSCDC Public Relations Officer, Tolulope Afolabi, in a statement, said the commandant spoke in Ado Ekiti while parading Ademiluyi and another suspected fraudster, Innocent Ekpako, 26, who was arrested in Cross River State for allegedly defrauding his boss.

The commandant, who said Ademiluyi had been perpetrating the act within the Ado Ekiti metropolis, said, “The suspect had defrauded over 25 PoS operators before men of the Counter-Terrorism Unit launched a manhunt for him with their dragnet, which paid off when he was arrested yesterday (Monday).
Preliminary investigation shows that he is not a doctor but an okada rider.”

Fayemi said Ekpako, who was arrested in Ikom, Cross River State, ran away with a huge sum of money belonging to his master in Ado Ekiti.

He said, “The suspect is a former employee of a store in Ado Ekiti where he worked as a sales representative before he was sent on an errand with some money which he did not return. He disappeared into thin air until he was tracked, traced and arrested in Cross River State. The two suspects have confessed to the crime.”

The commandant cautioned PoS operators and shop owners in the state to be careful of their workers and customers as the state command had been inundated with complaints bordering on PoS fraud and stealing.

4 killed during 8/8 cult celebration in Kwara

Four persons, including members of different cult groups, were reportedly shot dead at Olunlade area, Ilorin, Kwara State capital during the traditional celebration of August 8 (8/8) cult activities, Monday night.

It was gathered that residents of the area experienced sleepless night due to the sporadic gunshots that rented the area while the celebration lasted when members of various cult groups attacked themselves in a gun duel.

Residents of the area claimed no fewer than four persons were killed by different cult groups in a reprisal attack in an interview with journalists.

But, the spokesman of Kwara State Police Command, Ajayi Okasanmi, who confirmed the development, said only two deaths were recorded during the celebration

He said:  “Only two persons were killed in the 8/8 celebration by the cult groups and not four as being peddled around by some people. One person died at the spot of the crisis at Olunlade while the other was reported to have died later in the hospital.”

On the likely cause of the crisis, the PPRO said: “You know that yesterday (Monday) was August 8 and the different cult groups were celebrating the day in many places in the town.

We don’t know what might have triggered the crisis among the cult members at Olunlade, but we gathered that the crisis might not be unconnected with rivalry among the cult groups.

“We gathered from an intelligence report that crisis broke out and the rival cult members started shooting sporadically to attack each other.”

Okasanmi said the situation has been brought under control, adding that calmness had returned to the area.

However, a worker in a government establishment in the area told journalists that the crisis started Monday night at a local gin joint near Bovas Petrol station at Olunlade.

According to the worker, some members of a cult group trailed a man to the spot, but the target took to his heels and they opened fire on him.

“The bullet fired by the cult members hit two persons including the son of the local gin seller. They continued to chase their target and later got him and shot him in the head,” he said.

Another person, who identified himself simply as Abdulmojeed, said two persons were killed by the cult members while two others sustained bullet wounds.

Gunmen: Anambra Schools call for security as parents withdraw children

PARENTS in some rural schools in Anambra State have pleaded with Governor Chukwuma Soludo to deploy security operatives to the schools as a protective measure against the menacing gunmen in parts of the state.

Their argument is that because of the security situation, many parents were withdrawing their children from schools, adding that the governor’s action in that regard would encourage them to return their wards to schools.

The proprietor of Friend of Friends Schools, Nnewi, Mr. Festus Okeke- Enyobi said with the reintroduction of the Anambra Vigilante Group, which has been operating in the state, there would be enough security personnel to go round the schools.

He said: “We think the major thing these rural schools need now is security personnel, especially in the most affected gunmen -targeted local government areas. “The governor should deploy security personnel to all the schools in rural areas.

The state of insecurity in the state, especially, in and around Nnewi, Ihiala, Ekwusigo local government areas, requires security presence in all the public/private schools to boost the students confidence while in their classrooms”.

According to Okeke-Enyobi, restoration of security in schools would also ensure improvement in the standard of education in the state.

He also appealed to politicians and philanthropists in the state to assist government in its efforts to address security situation in the state.

He lamented dearth of social amenities in state-owned schools, adding that apart from insecurity, most schools in the state also lack electricity, water and sports facilities.

Another parent, Mr. Ignatius Maduka observed that population of many schools in the rural areas had dropped since the activities of the gunmen increased in the state and suggested that communities should also fortify their vigilante outfits to complement the one established by Governor Soludo.

Maduka said that only schools in the urban centers have full compliment of pupils and students as many parents in the rural areas have withdrawn their children from schools.
