Nigerian s3x worker stabbed, strangled to death

A sex worker plying her trade at a popular brothel in Ughelli, headquarters of Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta State, was Thursday night stabbed and strangled to death by yet to be identified assailants.

The deceased, simply identified as Miss Confidence, it was gathered, was found dead in her room in the brothel after she failed to show up to join her colleagues to scout for customers.

The development caused pandemonium in the area as panic stricken colleagues of the deceased were said to have fled the area

“Her colleagues were waiting for her outside as they were looking for customers but they didn’t see her. They now went to knock at her door and it was when they opened the door that they found her dead in her room,” a source who craved anonymity said.

Contacted yesterday, Police Public Relations Officer of the State Command, Mr. Bright Edafe confirmed the incident saying, “She was stabbed on the stomach and strangled”.

He said the police had commenced investigation into the matter, adding that no arrest has so far been made.

The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed a police officer, Corporal Opeyemi Kadiri with Force No. 509745, attached to Dolphin Divisional Headquarters, Lagos Police Command for gross misconduct, disobedience to lawful order, and assault on a member of the public captured in a viral video on August 3, 2022.

The dismissed officer assaulted the commuter who attempted to bring the order to his notice.

Battery: Suspended Anambra LG chair should be arrested – Rights Group

Civil rights advocacy group, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, on Friday, urged the Anambra State Police Command to arrest the suspended Transition Committee Chairman of Nnewi North Local Government Area in Anambra State, Mbazulike Iloka, over the alleged battery of his wife.
The group said the state government must ensure the immediate arrest and prosecution of the LG boss beyond his suspension.

HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, in a statement on Friday, tasked Governor Chukwuma Soludo to make a scapegoat of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act domesticated in Anambra in 2017 which criminalised all types of violence against persons, and offering protection and remedies for victims.

An outrage had met the controversial death of IIoka’s wife, Chidiebere, last Sunday, barely a few days after he was sworn in as Nnewi North LGA TC chairman.

According to reports, the deceased slumped and died after serving her husband’s breakfast but neighbours suspected that Iloka may have killed his wife, as he allegedly had a record of battering her.

The Anambra State Government subsequently suspended IIoka for “investigation and justice”.

But HURIWA’s Onwubiko said, “The suspension of Mbazulike Iloka by the state government is not enough. Governor Chukwuma Soludo must order the immediate arrest, investigation and prosecution of this suspected killer. Anything short of this is leniency taken too far.

“Anambra is notorious for domestic and gender-based violence in homes, churches, offices, markets, motor parks, and even in commercial buses. The governor must send a strong warning to the aggressors by publicly shaming the LG boss within the ambit of the law. An autopsy must be carried out immediately and the outcome must not be compromised. There must be no cover-ups.

“Recall that another South-Easterner from Imo State, and popular gospel singer, Osinachi Nwachukwu, died controversially early 2022 after her husband, Peter Nwachukwu, allegedly battered her, going by the testimonies of the victim’s sisters and children. Just as Peter is currently being prosecuted, Iloka must be tried to serve as strong deterrence to other wife-batterers.

“Anambra must also go beyond domesticating the VAPPA Act to enforcing it and prosecuting offenders in tandem with its components. Anambra must contribute a quota in reducing national statistics of sexual and gender-based violence cases which the National Human Rights Commission put at 1.7 million in 2021 alone whilst many cases have gone unreported.”

  • Police Inspector kills sergeant, injures four other officers in Imo

Police Inspector kills sergeant, injures four other officers in Imo

An Inspector of Police, simply identified as Okebata, has allegedly shot dead a police sergeant identified as Iseke Korodama.

The incident, which happened on Wednesday midnight, had caused panic within the state’s police command.

Our correspondent gathered on Friday that the incident, which took place at Agwa- Ejemekwuru Road in the Oguta Local Government Area of the state, had three other police officers and their civilian driver injured.

Police sources told our correspondent that the inspector that allegedly shot his colleague is from the Ambassador Unit of the Police Tactical Unit at the command headquarters but was on duty in Egbema.

“The victims are the operatives from the Surveillance team of the command headquarters. The attacking team is from the Ambassador Unit,” a source said.

Our correspondent gathered that the victims were riding in an unmarked vehicle when attacked.

Another source said, “It was an operational error. The offensive team mistook them to be criminals who were on their way to attack Ogboaku police station.”

Others injured were Inspector Saviour Isong, Inspector Samuel Chukwuekezi, Sergeant Okija Darlington, and the driver, Emmanuel Onyemana.

The driver, conveying the team in a minibus before the attack, is still in critical condition.

Speaking in hushed tones, one was heard telling his colleagues, “These men, especially Inspector Korodama, had worked with the Officer Commanding (O. C) Ambassadors Squad, Egbema, Inspector Chikadia Okebata (‘Kill and Bury’) at Egbema and they met each other that same night before the incident.”

A source said, “The policemen got a signal that a group of bandits were preparing an attack and were headed their way, so they positioned to intercept the hoodlums. So when an unmarked Mini-bus moving at night with heavily armed occupants came their way, they mistook them for the hoodlums and tried to demobilize them. That is what I heard until we see an official statement from the command.

When our correspondent visited the Police Clinic where the victims were said to have been admitted, it was found that they had been discharged except for the deceased.

A reliable source, however, confided in our correspondent that Inspector Iseke Korodama and the driver were rushed to the hospital the same Wednesday night. While the Inspector was pronounced dead on arrival, the driver was treated and allowed to go on Thursday.

Other casualties, Saviour Isong, Samuel Chukwuekezi, and Okija Darlington, came to the clinic on Thursday, were treated for their injuries, and discharged the same day.

The command’s spokesperson, Micheal Abattam, had yet to respond to the inquiries made by our correspondent as of the time of filing this report.

  • Thieves attack Katsina Government House, steal N31m

Thieves attack Katsina Government House, steal N31m

Thieves, for the second time this year, allegedly broke into the Katsina State government house and stole N31 million.

The robbery incident according to a credible source occured on Sunday, 31 July 2022 when unknown persons broke into the office of the Financial Controller of the Government House and took the money contained in a sack.

Reports say that in 2020, N16m was also stolen from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the State (SGS).

Two government officials at the SGS office and a security guard were arrested in connection with the theft.

According to the source, the robbery incident took place while the Financial Controller, Salisu Batsari, was still at the office.

“I didn’t see the CCTV footage but you know it’ll be part of what the police will request. But I heard that the footage revealed a man wearing a face mask getting into the office through a half-shut window,” he said.

The Director General to the Governor on New Media, Al Amin Isa, confirmed the theft to journalists but withheld the details of the stolen money.

However, Al Amin said the state government in conjunction with the police are already on top of the issue, noting that the culprits would be punished accordingly.

“When the first theft occurred, the government took measures to avert a reoccurrence but you know how cunning these people could be,” Al Amin said.

It was further gathered from the source that those arrested in connection with the theft had since been released.

“When on Monday the State government found out about the theft, it quickly involved the police and an investigation was launched. The FC (financial controller) and some of his staff as well some security officers that were on duty on the fateful day were invited by the police for questioning,” the source said.

On why they were released, he said he was not aware since he was not part of the police investigations.

  • Owo massacre: Security agencies move to arrest sponsors

Owo massacre: Security agencies move to arrest sponsors

Security agencies have begun a manhunt for the financiers of   the June 5, 2022 terrorist attack on the Saint Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State, in which 40 worshippers were killed and scores injured.

The Federal Government had earlier blamed the attack on the Islamic State West Africa Province terrorists, a claim the Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu contested.

It was gathered on Wednesday that the security operatives had identified the sponsors and directed all port and border authorities to watch out for them.

A security source told one of our correspondents that no fewer than nine of those involved in the bloody attack were in custody. The source also disclosed that security agencies were launched manhunt for five financiers.

The source said, ‘’The security agencies have nabbed nine persons for direct or indirect involvement in the bloody attack on the Owo Catholic Church. They are now in the process of apprehending the financiers and sponsors of the terror attack. Officers at the nation’s airports and borders have been ordered to watch out for and arrest the culprits who are on the run as they may be desperate to leave the country to evade justice.’’

However, he could not independently confirm the claims.

When contacted, the Director, Defence Information, Major General Jimmy Akpor, said he had no information on the fleeing terror financiers or the efforts being made to arrest them.

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Luck Irabor had on Tuesday disclosed that suspected terrorists involved in the Owo attack were arrested in Kogi state on August 1.

Speaking at a parley with editors and media executives at the Defence headquarters, Abuja, Irabor said those in custody include Idris Ojo, an ISWAP commander who escaped from the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre on July 5; Momoh Abubakar, Aliyu Itopa, Auwal Onimisi, Idris Omeiza and Jimoh Ibrahim.

But Irabor identified Omeiza and Ibrahim as the suspected masterminds of the attack.

However, Akeredolu faulted the CDS over the list of suspects in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Richard Olatunde, on Wednesday.

Akeredolu argued that Ojo was one of the escapees of Kuje Prison and not the Owo massacre perpetrator as claimed by the CDS.

Clarifying the CDS’ statement on the list of suspects, Akpor  explained that Irabor disclosed that four terrorists were arrested in Kogi state.

According to him, out of the four suspects, Omeiza was the one linked with the Owo attack.

Akpor made the clarification in a statement on Wednesday, titled, ‘Gen Irabor meets with media executives, reveals arrest of mastermind of Owo Catholic Church attack.’

He said, “The CDS said that through the collaborative efforts of military and Department of State Services personnel, four terrorists were arrested at Eika, Okehi LGA, Kogi State on 1 August, 2022. Those arrested included Idris Omeiza (a.k.a Bin Malik), Momoh Abubakar, Aliyu  Itopa and Auwal Onimisi.

‘’The Defence Chief said preliminary investigation revealed that Idris Omeiza was the mastermind of the terror attack on the Owo Catholic Church as well as the attack on a police station in the Adavi LGA, Kogi State on June 23, 2022, during which a policeman was killed and weapons carted away.”

He also explained that the Kuje prison escapee, Ojo, was planning another attack before his arrest at Ayetoro Osi, Ondo State, through the combined effort of the military and DSS personnel on August 7.

“Idris Ojo, the CDS said, was one of the suspected ISWAP terrorists who escaped from the Kuje Medium Correctional Centre on July 5, 2022. The CDS also mentioned that Ojo was arrested alongside Jimoh Ibrahim (39 years), a sympathizer of the terrorist group, who accommodated him,’’ Akpor further explained.

Meanwhile, Akeredolu, on Monday  alleged that there was a terror cell in Okene, a town in Kogi State. He linked the Owo massacre to the Okene terror gang.

Akeredolu, who stated that the gang must be confronted and eliminated, said the terrorists often strike in Kogi, Ekiti and in Ondo.

The governor said this when he appeared on Channels Television’s Politics Today programmed on Monday, during which he clarified a statement of his misconstrued to mean he linked the Ebira tribe to the June 5 attack.

He said, “I don’t want to be emphatic on that point because what I said is being mixed up now. I addressed issues on the terrorists who came to Owo on June 5 and at the same time I went ahead to address kidnap incidents that we have had of recent and I said Ebira people were probably involved in this. I also said we were going to call a meeting with the Ebira community within Ondo State. We have lived together for too long for this sort of incident to happen and that was a separate thing.

“But it is clear, from what we have, that a terror gang in Okene… we all know that Okene is a land of the Ebira. The terror gang in Okene were involved in the incident of June 5. What do we make of that? Are they all Ebira? That is for us to find out.

“We can’t conclude with their names because we can see that a number of them have two names like so, so and so Ibn something. The Department of State Security are still looking at this. So, we must live that until they come out with the proper location of where they come from before we jump into total conclusion.

“For me, I know that there is a terror cell in Okene, and everybody knows that, and they strike across the country. They strike in Kogi, Ekiti and strike in Ondo State. But this terror cell is one that must be confronted and eliminated. What I’m trying to say is that my reference to the Ebira during a courtesy visit by the union of journalists were on incidents that happened recently, and I said no, these were our brothers, we have lived together for long, they cannot get involved in this sort of trade. Let them concentrate on their farming and their trade, rather than getting involved in kidnapping. So, that was a different case.”

In a related development, the Nigerian Air Force said the operations conducted by the air component of ‘Operation Whirl Punch’   in Kaduna state killed many terrorists, including a kingpin identified as Alhaji Shanono.

The operations which were conducted between August 9  also led to the rescue of 26 kidnapped victims.

A  statement by the Nigerian Air Force spokesperson, Edward Gabkwet on Wednesday, stated that Shanono was planning a meeting with his soldiers under a tree when the aircraft deployed in the area for a mission sighted

Following the attack on St Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State, months ago, two more terrorists suspected to be members of the Islamic State of the West African Province (ISWAP) have been arrested.
Recall that the Ondo State governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, had on Tuesday confirmed that about five terrorists linked to the attack were arrested in the State.

The disclosure was made in a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Jimmy Akpor.

He stated that the suspected terrorists were arrested at Omialafara (Omulafa), Ose Local Government Area, Ondo State, on Tuesday through the joint efforts of the military and the Department of State Services, DSS.

“It is instructive to note that Abdulhaleem, alongside other high profile ISWAP Commanders, had also previously coordinated attacks on military targets in Okene, Okene LGA, Kogi State resulting in casualties”.
