Some stalwarts of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South East have dismissed a purported consensus list of members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) circulating on social media, describing it as fake and the handiwork of desperate aspirants seeking re-election at all costs.
The list, which surfaced online on Wednesday night ahead of the party’s convention scheduled for Saturday, March 28, 2026, in Abuja, reportedly contains several names said to be unknown to party structures in various states, particularly in the South East geopolitical zone.
Among those featured on the alleged list is Chief Emma Enukwu, who is seeking re-election as Deputy National Chairman (South).
It was gathered that Enukwu, an indigene of Enugu State who has served as a national officer of the party for over 13 years, is among those opposed to the consensus arrangement being promoted by the APC national leadership across the six geopolitical zones.
The position of Deputy National Chairman (South) is zoned to Enugu State and is being contested by former state chairman of the party, Dr. Ben Nwoye, and the incumbent, Enukwu.
Our correspondent, who has been monitoring pre-convention activities, reports that the purported list has continued to generate reactions within APC circles.
One of the most contentious inclusions is Barrister Emeka Okafor from Anambra State, listed as Deputy National Organising Secretary. However, party chieftains in the state have claimed he is unknown within established party structures.
Reacting in a telephone interview, a party chieftain from Anambra State, who requested anonymity, said:
“My brother, this is what desperation can cause; it is not surprising. We know where this fake list is coming from and those behind it, especially the mastermind, because they want to remain in office.
“Imagine someone unknown to us in Anambra State being listed as a consensus candidate for Deputy National Organising Secretary. Isn’t that amusing?
“They should be assured that such unpopular tactics will not succeed, as they cannot change anything. We strongly believe in a consensus arrangement that promotes unity in our great party at all levels.”
Another source from Enugu State, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, described the development as unfortunate:
“It is really unfortunate that certain selfish individuals, especially from the South East, are unwilling to relinquish office.
“They see these positions as their birthright, forgetting that every bona fide member has equal rights in the party. Let us watch and see how it unfolds.”
