How I paid dealer N2,650 for car worth N2.65m –fraudster

Tunde Abdul-Lasis, an Iwo-based businessman recently paraded by the police in Osun State, narrates how he tricked a car dealer in Osogbo
What is your name?
My name is Tunde Abdul-Lasis. I am a 27-year-old businessman. I am married with kids. I already have a motorcycle and a car before the incident that got me arrested by the police.
What led to your arrest?
On Friday (November 26), I came to Osogbo from Iwo, where I live with my family, to check on my mother. But before going to her, I went to a car mart, and I met the vehicles dealer.
I identified my choice car, a Toyota Camry (muzzle), and after bargaining for few minutes, we agreed that I would buy the vehicle for the sum of N2.650m.
After we had agreed on the price, I checked the car very well and then requested the seller’s account number. I then made a transfer of N2,650 to him. He got bank alert immediately but he didn’t check it well to really confirm the amount that I paid. He handed over the car documents and keys to me. And I left with the car.
Did you transfer N2,659 instead of N2.650m by mistake or was it intentional?
I did it intentionally, it wasn’t a mistake. I needed a car and I didn’t have the money to buy the car of my choice. Before I left home that day, I had resolved to try out the trick and it worked perfectly.
It’s surprising the dealer fell for your trick. Did you charm him?
I didn’t charm him. I was able to do it successfully and he didn’t suspect any foul play because he saw N2,650, which appeared like N2.650m that he demanded for the vehicle.
How many times had you engaged in such an act before this last one?
It was my first time of doing it. I had never tried such before. And I didn’t use juju but the man fell for it. I was very happy and was in a hurry to run out of the car mart before being caught. I was nervous but I kept it under checks. I successfully left with the car.
Did you take the car after leaving the car mart?
After I had successfully taken the car out of Osogbo, I drove it to a painter in Iwo to help me repaint it.
It was the devil’s work. The devil led me into doing it. I was scared but something kept pushing me to continue.
I don’t really understand myself. I woke up that fateful Friday morning and I travelled down to Osogbo with my motorcycle. But I had the thought that I was buying a new car that day.
The third day after the incident, which was November 30, 2021, policemen came to my house and asked me where the car was and I took them to the painter’s shop.
For three days that the car was in your custody, was your mind at peace at all?
No, my mind wasn’t at peace at all, which was the more reason why I didn’t use it at all. I couldn’t even drive it around or tell anyone about it. I could not celebrate it or inform anyone. I was afraid I could be caught, but I had already committed the crime and couldn’t undo the deed.

Stone, who was the celebrant, reportedly died from gunshot injuries sustained during the ensuing police operation.
Information available to Everydaynewsngr.net indicated that the misunderstanding at the birthday party degenerated into chaos, prompting the hotel management to call in operatives of the police Anti-Cultism Section.
In the confusion that followed, Stone was said to have attempted to escape through a window alongside another person before he sustained gunshot injuries.
However, the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting remained unclear as of the time of filing this report.
The Enugu State Police Command has since confirmed Stone’s death and ordered an investigation into the incident.
In a press release issued on Friday, October 23, 2026, the command said the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, had directed a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the death and determine whether the operation and use of firearms complied with established operational standards and applicable laws.
According to the police, operatives of the Anti-Cultism Section of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) stormed Bull Hotel during an intelligence-led operation targeting Nworie Chidera Kelvin, popularly known as Akidi, an alleged drug dealer and member of the Vikings Confraternity.
The police said Akidi was suspected of involvement in several cases relating to cultism and unlawful possession of firearms.
The operation reportedly led to the arrest of Akidi and nine other suspects, comprising males and females aged between 17 and 28.
The police also said quantities of dried weeds suspected to be cannabis, a weighing scale allegedly used for measuring illicit drugs, and ₦43,400 in cash were recovered during the operation.

The commissioner assured that any officer found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary action.
He also urged Stone’s family, associates and members of the public to remain calm, stressing that professionalism, ethical conduct and strict adherence to operational standards, particularly those governing the use of firearms, must be upheld during police operations.

Awaiting-Trial Inmate Escapes From Court

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Edo State Command, has launched a manhunt for a 28-year-old awaiting-trial inmate, Osita Thomas, who escaped while being taken to court for trial.
Thomas, an inmate of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Auchi, reportedly escaped last week during a court appearance over charges bordering on conspiracy and stealing.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Aminu Suleman, disclosed the development in a statement dated October 21, 2026, and made available to journalists in Benin City on Thursday.
Suleman said the Controller of Corrections in Edo State had directed intensified efforts towards apprehending the fugitive, assuring residents that security measures across custodial facilities had been strengthened to prevent similar incidents.
The Command appealed to members of the public with useful information about Thomas’s whereabouts to report to the nearest police station or custodial centre.
It also released two telephone numbers, 08038075882 and 08039243704, through which information could be provided to security authorities.
Meanwhile, an official of the Correctional Service attributed the escape to inadequate manpower, explaining that the officer escorting Thomas to court could not abandon other inmates in his custody to pursue the fleeing suspect.
According to the official, pursuing Thomas would have exposed the remaining inmates to possible escape.
The official further raised concerns over worsening personnel shortages in the Service, alleging that more than 1,000 officers were expected to retire this year without corresponding plans for fresh recruitment.
He called on the Federal Government to urgently address the manpower deficit, warning that inadequate personnel could continue to undermine the effective management and security of custodial facilities across the country.
