Ekpa’s Arrest Reduced Insecurity In SouthEast – CDS

Published

Maduka University

The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Christopher Musa, on Tuesday said the arrest of pro-Biafran agitator,  Simon Ekpa, in Finland has brought down the level of insecurity in the South-East zone of the country.

He also stated that the launch of Operation Udoka by the Defence Headquarters is gradually restoring peace in the troubled region.

The CDS made the remarks while fielding questions from members of the House Committee on Defence when he appeared before the lawmakers to defend the 2025 defence proposal on Tuesday.

The DHQ in 2024 launched Operation Udoka to combat growing insecurity in the South-East, which has been linked to the agitation for a sovereign Biafran nation.

Ekpa, a self-acclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra based in Finland, was arrested in November 2024 by Finnish security agents owing to his violent and inciting campaigns on radio and social media.

Briefing lawmakers on Tuesday, the defence chief said, “With the arrest of Simon Ekpa, the tension in the South-East has greatly reduced. Also with Operation Udoka, we’re picking up most of the leadership of these groups, taking them out and making sure that the place is peaceful.

“The sit-at-home on Mondays is gradually diminishing. We’re also working with the political leaders there because we understand, like I always say, that we need local support because,  without it, it’s difficult. You know, the terrain is very challenging, so we need to work together. It is improving.”

The four-star General also pledged the continuous deployment of non-kinetic approaches to tackling the insecurity challenges in the region.

“We had some intelligence and worked ahead to ensure that everywhere during the last holidays was kept peaceful. That has happened and we intend to do that and continue to do more. What we try to encourage is synergy in our operations.

“And like we always appeal, Nigerians must take ownership of their armed forces; they have to take ownership of the security challenges we are facing. It’s not a challenge for the armed forces alone or security agencies; it’s everybody’s responsibility,” he added.

Musa assured Nigerians that with the steps so far taken, the country is now aiming to attain 2.2 million barrels per day of oil production in the months ahead.

“What we have done is that we have established and enhanced the kinetic efforts for the three services for our operations. We have the Delta Safe, which is in the South-South for oil theft and militancy. At least for the first time now, we have been able to reach our OPEC oil quota for Nigeria and we intend to do more.

“Our target is to hit 2.2mbpd for Nigeria. It’s not something that we can do alone. We also need other stakeholders in the oil industry to also play their role. We are doing more, providing more security. We are close to 2 million barrels per day. We intend to do more. This year, we want to intensify our operations,” he assured.

The CDS also called for improvement of border management to address the problem of smuggling, even as he added that the military in the past year rescued many children who were been trafficked out of the country.

Five men have been arrested and arraigned before a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Maiduguri, Borno State, after police allegedly found them wearing T-shirts bearing the words “Tinubu Must Go.”

The defendants were identified as Baba Aji Gremami, 44; Mustapha Abba Yemen, 28; Abbacha Mohammed Ali, 32; Adam Umar Gubio, 21; and Abdulhamid Mohammed, 21.

According to a First Information Report issued by the State Criminal Investigation Department, the incident occurred on September 25, 2026, near West End Roundabout in Maiduguri.

Police charged the five men with criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, disturbance of public peace and thuggery under Sections 60, 78, 79 and 392 of the Borno State Penal Code.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges when they appeared before Chief Magistrate Court I in Maiduguri.

Their lawyer subsequently applied for bail. The court adjourned the matter until October 6, 2026, to rule on the bail application, while the substantive trial has been scheduled for October 26.

The case has drawn attention because the alleged conduct involved wearing clothing displaying a political message.

Amnesty International criticised the prosecution, describing the arrests as arbitrary and arguing that peaceful political expression is protected by fundamental human rights. The organisation called for the immediate release of the five men and urged authorities to discontinue the case.

Amnesty International also expressed concern that the prosecution could have implications for political expression and opposition activities in Borno State.

The case has generated reactions on social media, with some commentators questioning whether the display of political messages on clothing should constitute a criminal offence.

There have also been allegations that a prominent politician in Borno State may have influenced the arrests. The allegation has not been independently verified.

Efforts to obtain a comment from the Borno State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Kenneth Daso, were reportedly unsuccessful as of the time of filing.

The defendants remain subject to the court process, and the allegations against them have not been established in court.

The couple were reportedly returning from their engagement ceremony in Eruku on Saturday evening when armed men intercepted their vehicle and abducted them alongside four other passengers.

According to sources, the vehicle was initially expected to take the Isanlu Road. However, the driver reportedly chose an alternative route to drop off the best man and other members of the group at Iyamoye in Kogi State.
