As the 2027 governorship election in Enugu State approaches, political undercurrents are intensifying, with several high-profile figures quietly and openly positioning themselves to challenge the incumbent, Peter Mbah.
While more than five aspirants are believed to be testing the waters, this analysis focuses on the most prominent contenders shaping the early dynamics of the race.
Chinyeaka Ohaa:
A retired Federal Permanent Secretary and seasoned technocrat, remains a formidable figure in Enugu politics.
A former Accountant General of the state during the administration of Chimaroke Nnamani, Ohaa brings deep bureaucratic experience and grassroots connections.
He hails from Nkanu West LGA.
After losing the PDP ticket in 2023, he aligned with Governor Mbah and was later appointed Chairman of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology Governing Council. However, his recent resignation has fueled strong speculation about renewed political ambitions.
Despite earlier rumours linking him to the Enugu West Senatorial seat, credible indications suggest Ohaa is firmly focused on the governorship. His quiet consultations, including a notable visit to Rome where he met with Pope Francis, signal strategic networking ahead of the race.
Emerging reports also indicate he may seek the ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), positioning himself as a leading opposition candidate ahead 2027.
Uche Nnaji:
A former Minister and APC governorship candidate in 2023, Uche Nnaji is another key figure in the unfolding contest.
His political journey has been marked by controversy, including the certificate saga that led to his exit from federal office.
Nevertheless, Nnaji appears undeterred and highly motivated to stage a comeback.
Sources within his camp suggest that his ambition is driven not only by political aspiration but also by a desire to reclaim relevance and settle lingering scores, particularly with Governor Mbah, whom his supporters blame for his past setbacks.
Interestingly, Nnaji is reportedly exploring a shift in political alignment, working towards securing the PDP ticket ahead of 2027; an indication of the fluid and strategic realignments already underway.
Peter Mbah:
Governor Peter Mbah remains the central figure in the 2027 race and the candidate to beat.
Widely credited with infrastructural development and governance reforms in his early years, Mbah has leveraged performance to consolidate political capital across the state.
His strategic move to align with the All Progressives Congress (APC) further strengthens his position, potentially granting him access to federal backing and broader political structures.
With incumbency advantage, control of state machinery, and growing grassroots support, Mbah enters the race from a position of strength; though not without emerging opposition.
The 2027 Enugu governorship race is shaping up to be a high-stakes contest defined by: Political realignments across major parties; Personal rivalries and unresolved political battles; The influence of incumbency versus opposition coalitions and Regional and grassroots considerations, especially within Enugu’s geopolitical zones.
While it remains early, the moves by Ohaa and Nnaji signal that the battle lines are already being drawn. The coming months will likely see more aspirants emerge, alliances shift, and the political atmosphere in Enugu State grow even more charged.
The storm is indeed gathering. With seasoned technocrats, aggrieved contenders, and a sitting governor with strong leverage all in the mix, the 2027 Enugu governorship election promises to be interesting.
