Unlawful detention: Rights group demands release of Enugu Motor mechanic, writes IGP

Civil Rights, Realization and Advancement Network, CRRAN, has written the inspector General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, demanding the immediate release of Enugu Mechanic allegedly detained unlawfully.
The mechanic, Mr. Sunday Geoffrey and Mr. Eze Akoh, a car painter have been unlawfully arrested and detained at a police cell, Airport Command of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport Enugu, the group informed.
A petition signed by its president, Barr. Olu Omotayo noted that the duo were arrested since April 4th, 2024, as ordered by the Divisional Police Officer, DPO in charge of the station.
Omotayo in the petitioned said: “We write to you in respect of the above-mentioned matter on behalf of Mr. Sunday Geoffrey, a motor mechanic and Mr. Eze Akoh, a motor painter, both of whom carry out their respective businesses at a mechanic workshop along old Emene/ Abakaliki Road, Emene, Enugu.
“We were informed of their arrest and detention on the orders of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), of the Airport Police Station, inside Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, on the 4th April 2024, over a complaint made by a customer who gave Sunday Geofrey a car to repair for him.
According to him, “though Mr. Eze Akoh has nothing to do with the business, he was still arrested when Police invaded the mechanic workshop, being elderly he couldn’t run away like young apprentices; he is also presently dumped in a Police cell at Akanu Ibiam Airport.
“Mr. Sunday Geofrey said the customer in question invited him sometime in February 2024, to a Mechanic Workshop along Old Road Emene, to recover his vehicle which had been parked with a Gearbox issues for about two years.
He said the gearbox was not repaired but the customer said he should recover the motor to his workshop to see how it could be repaired, hence he called some apprentices and they pushed the motor to his own workshop which is about half a kilometer away.
“Mr. Geoffrey said at his Workshop, he pointed out to the customer that some things like the Plate number of the vehicle were missing, which the customer acknowledged, adding that he didn’t see the customer again to come and discuss how his vehicle will be repaired, until few days ago when he came back and was asking him to go and look for the missing plate number of the vehicle.
“The customer later left only to come back yesterday 4th May 2024, with policemen from Airport Police Station, who arrested him and while trying to arrest others in the workshop they only managed to arrest Mr. Eze Akoh.
The Human rights body posited that “this is an illegal and unlawful deployment of policemen outside their lawful duties. We condemn in unequivocal terms the unlawful arrest and detention of this duo.
“This is an abuse of office by policemen whose area of jurisdiction is the Akanu Ibiam International Airport Enugu. The detainees have no business at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, so also the police of Nigeria Police Airport Command has no business with issues outside the confines of Akanu Ibiam International Airport” the petition stated
“We submit that the transaction between Mr. Sunday Geoffrey is purely a civil matter involving a mechanic and his customer.
We demand an immediate and unconditional release of Mr. Sunday Geoffrey, and Mr. Eze Akoh, from their place of unlawful detention.

Five Arrested By Police For Wearing ‘Tinubu Must Go’ T-Shirts

Five men have been arrested and arraigned before a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Maiduguri, Borno State, after police allegedly found them wearing T-shirts bearing the words “Tinubu Must Go.”
The defendants were identified as Baba Aji Gremami, 44; Mustapha Abba Yemen, 28; Abbacha Mohammed Ali, 32; Adam Umar Gubio, 21; and Abdulhamid Mohammed, 21.
According to a First Information Report issued by the State Criminal Investigation Department, the incident occurred on September 25, 2026, near West End Roundabout in Maiduguri.
Police charged the five men with criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, disturbance of public peace and thuggery under Sections 60, 78, 79 and 392 of the Borno State Penal Code.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges when they appeared before Chief Magistrate Court I in Maiduguri.
Their lawyer subsequently applied for bail. The court adjourned the matter until October 6, 2026, to rule on the bail application, while the substantive trial has been scheduled for October 26.
The case has drawn attention because the alleged conduct involved wearing clothing displaying a political message.
Amnesty International criticised the prosecution, describing the arrests as arbitrary and arguing that peaceful political expression is protected by fundamental human rights. The organisation called for the immediate release of the five men and urged authorities to discontinue the case.
Amnesty International also expressed concern that the prosecution could have implications for political expression and opposition activities in Borno State.
The case has generated reactions on social media, with some commentators questioning whether the display of political messages on clothing should constitute a criminal offence.
There have also been allegations that a prominent politician in Borno State may have influenced the arrests. The allegation has not been independently verified.
Efforts to obtain a comment from the Borno State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Kenneth Daso, were reportedly unsuccessful as of the time of filing.
The defendants remain subject to the court process, and the allegations against them have not been established in court.

The board’s Public Relations Officer, Dauda Hadejia, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday, September 26, 2026.
Hadejia said the arrests followed a complaint filed by a 22-year-old man, who alleged that nine individuals had engaged in sexual acts with him on different occasions.

Following the complaint, Hadejia said Hisbah operatives launched an investigation and began searching for the nine individuals named by the complainant.
“So far, eight suspects have been arrested, while efforts are ongoing to arrest the remaining suspect,” Hadejia said.

Hadejia said the board had gathered information and evidence that would be presented before a court. He added that the investigation remained ongoing and that the suspects would be charged upon its completion.
The Deputy Commander-General of the Jigawa State Hisbah Board, Dr. Hussain Baban, reportedly urged parents to pay closer attention to their children’s upbringing and the people with whom they associate.
