For promoting various programmes aimed at promoting the welfare and rights of children, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka has honoured Mrs. Juliet Chiluwe, Chief of UNICEF Field Office, Enugu, Enugu state during the maiden National Summit on Child Rights held recently at the Awka campus of the university.

The two day programme also featured training on child rights laws for members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Anambra State Council and inauguration of Child Rights Clubs in Anambra Schools.

Declaring the event open, Ag. Vice Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi represented by the Director, Academic Planning, Prof Angela Ufele-Obiesie appreciated the efforts of UNICEF towards hosting the summit which is the first of such in Nigeria adding that today’s global concern on Child rights sprouted from the aversion of the vulnerabilities to which children were exposed in Europe during the second World war.

The Acting Vice chancellor stated that the 21st century has seen the emergence of a new technology and social milieu different from that of the previous age adding that the information age is characterized by rapidly bourgeoning information and communication technologies which are also available for children.

She called for the new developments to be deployed for the benefit of the Nigerian child through exposure to high quality education resources while protecting them from the numerous threats inherent in the digital technology such as internet addiction that could lead to poor academic performance.

Keynote Speaker, Dean, Faculty of Law, NAU, Prof V Ogugua Ikpeze posited that both male and female children should be given equal opportunities to enjoy their fundamental human rights cum Child rights saying that negative cultural practices like female genital mutilation should be abolished.

“Let us be vigilant to protect our children because child molestation may be ongoing behind your curtain perpetrated by a family member, friend, Neighbor or stranger. Watch when that child changes behavior and know the next step to take before the damage becomes irrecoverable,” Ikpeze added.

Chairman of the National Summit on Child Rights Planning Committee, UNIZIK , Dr Obiora Edogor in his address disclosed that in the last two years, t UNIZIK has joined in the growing global trend of giving more attention to studies on child rights as one of the means to ensure better protection of children.

Edogor said the abysmal situation of the Nigerian child even after over twenty years of the enactment of the Child Right’s Act 2003 is worrisome and should be redressed without further delay. This he said is to provide a conducive environment for the Nigerian child to thrive academically, technologically, scientifically, socially, politically, economically, culturally, etc.

He thanked the immediate past Vice Chancellor, Prof Charles Esimone who approve the Summit and the invaluable support of the incumbent AG. Vice Chancellor who made it happen eventually.

“The summit planning got more fillip with Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi’s assumption of office as the current Acting Vice-chancellor. As a scholar whose research interests traverse human rights, which child rights is a sub-category of, she embraced the summit with a motherly passion and speedily gave birth to it. In fact, our Acting Vice-chancellor has demonstrated that she is indeed a mother and a scholar with unconcealed bias on human rights, child rights inclusive. With the hosting of this summit, she has contributed her quota in Nnamdi Azikiwe University’s lofty achievements in promotion of studies on child rights”

“I would want to arguably state that, the Nnamdi Azikiwe University’s soil is manured with staff that exude enthusiasm for child rights as I got immersed into it from the university. I could vividly recall how Prof. Chinyere Okunna, first female professor of mass communication in sub-Saharan Africa FNGE, FNIPR, FACCE, NUJ Matriarch, implanted in me the mustard seed and zeal for studies on child rights. Today, this summit is one of the fruits of that Okunna’s mustard seed. Also, the child rights club to be inaugurated in this event in all public secondary schools within Anambra State emanated from the same Okunna’s seed”

“In a nutshell, the gamut of attention that Nnamdi Azikiwe University has given to child rights should be religiously sustained for better awareness about the subject matter. All communities, parents, governmental organisations, non-governmental organisations, as well as every other stakeholder on child rights in Nigeria should take positive and consistent steps in the protection of children to avoid making the country a liability to posterity. So, no stone should be left unturned by all stakeholders towards putting the Nigerian child in the vantage position to profit from the bounties of this age” Edogor said.

Presenting a paper titled “Taking Sustainable Positive Actions for the Nigerian Child in the Information Age”, Mrs. Juliet Chiluwe, Chief of UNICEF Field Office , Enugu who was represented by Dr Ijeoma Onuoha-Ogwe during the Summit said that when adults make decisions, they should think about how their decisions will affect children.

“All adults should do what is best for children. Governments should make sure children are protected and looked after by their parents, or by other people when this is needed. Governments should make sure that people and places responsible for looking after children are doing a good job.”

“The Convention on the Rights of the child is very intentional on who child is, that is children below 18 years of age. Article 23 unequivocally maintained that every child has the right to an education. Primary education should be free. Secondary and higher education should be available to every child. Children should be encouraged to go to school to the highest level possible. Discipline in schools should respect children’s rights and never use violence”she said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Paul’s University and NUJ Matriarch, Prof. Chinyere Stella Okunna, in her paper titled ‘The Role Of The Nigerian Media In Bridging The Urban And Rural Divide For Children In The Digital Age’, tasked journalists to be internet savvy and use their power to help children enjoy their rights as enshrined in the Child rights law including access to the digital space.

Prof Okunna charged them as gatekeepers to open doors of access to quality information in the digital space and discourage anybody that who does not want children both in the rural and urban areas to access the information opportunities provided by digital ICT.

Mbah: Building Smart Schools, Nurturing Young Minds and Securing Enugu’s Future

Published

Maduka University

…As governor shares touching moment with child, reinforces vision of a brighter future for the next generation

For Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, leadership is not merely about building roads, bridges and other physical infrastructure. It is equally about investing in people, particularly children whose future depends on the decisions and investments made today.

This vision finds expression in his administration’s ambitious Smart Green Schools initiative, designed to transform the educational landscape of Enugu State and equip young people with the knowledge, digital skills and opportunities required to compete in a rapidly changing world.

In this heartwarming photograph, Governor Mbah is seen holding a young child during a public engagement, a moment that offers a compelling illustration of the generation his administration’s educational reforms seek to serve.

Beyond the symbolism of the photograph lies a broader development agenda that places education, human capital development and the welfare of young people at the centre of governance.

Through the construction of 260 Smart Green Schools across the state’s electoral wards, the Mbah administration is pursuing a future in which access to modern learning facilities will no longer be the exclusive privilege of children from wealthy backgrounds or urban communities.

The initiative reflects a commitment to bridging educational inequalities, encouraging innovation and preparing Enugu children for opportunities beyond the traditional classroom.

For Mbah, the true measure of development is not simply what a government builds during its tenure, but the opportunities it creates for generations yet unborn.

The child in his arms today could become tomorrow’s scientist, engineer, medical doctor, entrepreneur or political leader.

And that, perhaps, is the strongest message behind his administration’s investment in education: the future of Enugu is not something to be awaited; it is something to be deliberately built, one child and one school at a time.

The school clinched the first position at Zecathon 6.0, the 2026 innovation programme, defeating other finalists from across Nigeria.

The winning team comprises four senior secondary school students: Deborah Iweha, Makayla Inyere, Fife Alonge and Okeke Janelle.

ReLearn is a digital platform designed to make unused textbooks available to students who need them, helping families reduce the cost of educational materials while improving access to learning resources.

According to the project description, the students developed the platform after conducting independent research with parents and identifying the high cost of textbooks as a challenge facing many families.

Team member Deborah Iweha said the platform would help families save money and ensure that children had access to the appropriate textbooks for their studies.

Another team member, Fife Alonge, said ReLearn would help bridge educational gaps by enabling children in underserved communities to obtain quality learning materials at a fraction of the market price.

The initiative aligns with three United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: Quality Education, Reduced Inequalities, and Responsible Consumption and Production.

The Future Innovators Challenge is organised by Zenith Bank in partnership with Beyond Limits as part of the broader Zecathon 6.0 programme. It provides senior secondary school students with opportunities to develop skills in teamwork, problem-solving and technology.

The competition offers a combined prize pool of ₦10 million for the top three schools.

With the ₦5 million prize money, the CBIS team plans to expand ReLearn beyond the school to make thousands of additional textbooks accessible to Nigerian students.

The Director of Caleb Group of Schools, Dr. Oladega Adebogun, expressed delight at the achievement, describing the students as worthy ambassadors of the institution.

Adebogun attributed the success to the school’s investment in modern information and communication technology learning hubs, innovation laboratories and audiovisual facilities.

The Ondo State Ministry of Education has summoned a public secondary school principal in Oke Aro, Akure, following reports that prospective students were subjected to blood tests as a condition for admission into Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS1).

The development reportedly occurred during the 2026/2027 academic session and has raised concerns among parents and education stakeholders in the state.

Newly admitted students at the school were allegedly directed to undergo blood tests at a small retail shop located opposite the school before their admission could be completed.

A parent alleged that she was instructed to pay ₦8,000 for what was described as an emergency JSS1 admission test, adding that her ward would not be admitted without undergoing the test.

Following the report, the principal was reportedly summoned by officials of the state Ministry of Education to explain the circumstances surrounding the blood-testing exercise.

The principal, according reportedly acknowledged being aware of the blood-taking exercise but denied involvement in organising it. She reportedly told officials that the practice had been in place before she assumed office as the school’s principal.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education confirmed that the principal had been summoned on the directive of the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, to clarify the circumstances surrounding the development. A query was also reportedly issued to the principal.

The commissioner, in a separate interview said the state government did not authorise any school principal to make blood sampling a requirement for admission.

He described the practice as strange to the ministry and stated that no such directive had been issued by the government.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ondo State has reportedly taken over the investigation.

The Corps’ spokesperson in the state, David Dan, confirmed that a man identified as Alfa had been arrested in connection with the incident.

According to him, although Alfa’s shop was allegedly used for the blood-taking exercise, the individual who carried out the actual procedure was said to be at large.

The NSCDC reportedly assured that efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing individual, while further information obtained during the investigation could help determine whether other persons were involved.

The development has also renewed concerns among some parents over alleged illegal charges and other practices in public schools.

A parent, Mrs Olaoba Josephine, from Estate High School, Shagari Village, Akure, alleged that parents were instructed to come to the school with their ATM cards to pay school fees, claiming that a POS operator was already stationed at the school to receive payments.

Parents also alleged that some principals continue to engage in practices such as the sale of textbooks to students, despite the reported abolition of such practices.

One parent who spoke on the broader issue alleged that some school principals had adopted different methods of collecting money from parents and newly admitted students, while calling for closer monitoring of public schools by relevant authorities.

The Ministry of Education and security agencies are expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged blood-testing requirement and establish whether any individuals or officials should face further action.
