A former commissioner and ex-local government chairman, Vitus Okechi, has been elected as the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State, pledging to reposition the party, rebuild its internal structures, and reclaim its dominant political footing.
Okechi emerged victorious at the PDP State Congress held in Enugu on March 14, an event that drew delegates from across the state to elect a new set of party executives. His emergence is widely regarded as a calculated step by key stakeholders aimed at restoring cohesion, strengthening leadership, and preparing the party for future electoral contests.

In his acceptance speech, Okechi expressed deep appreciation to party members and delegates for the trust reposed in him, assuring them of a leadership style anchored on inclusivity, transparency, and collective decision-making. He emphasized that under his watch, every segment of the party would be given a voice, regardless of political alignment or past differences.
“Our immediate task is to rebuild trust within our ranks, reunite aggrieved members, and re-energise our grassroots base. The PDP in Enugu has a proud history, and together, we will return it to its rightful place of strength and victory,” he said.
Drawing from his extensive experience in governance, both as a former commissioner and a local government chairman, Okechi highlighted the importance of reconnecting with communities at the ward and local levels. He noted that a strong grassroots structure would be central to the party’s revival strategy.
He also stressed the need for discipline, loyalty, and unity among party members, warning that internal divisions had previously weakened the party’s chances at the polls. According to him, the new leadership would prioritise reconciliation and ensure that lingering disputes are addressed through dialogue and mutual understanding.
Party stakeholders and faithful who attended the congress expressed optimism about Okechi’s emergence, describing him as a seasoned administrator with the capacity to steer the PDP through a period of rebuilding. Many believe his dual experience at both state and local government levels positions him well to bridge gaps within the party and foster stronger coordination.
Political observers say Okechi’s election signals a renewed determination within the PDP to regain its political relevance in Enugu State. They note that his leadership will be closely watched, particularly in how he manages internal dynamics and mobilises support ahead of upcoming elections.
With expectations high, Okechi has assured members that his tenure will be defined by action, unity, and a clear roadmap to electoral success, as the party begins a new chapter in its quest for resurgence.
