Senator representing Imo East and a member of the Labour Party (LP), Ezenwa Onyewuchi, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Onyewuchi’s defection letter was read on the floor of the red chamber by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday.
Hope Uzodimma, the governor of Imo and chair of the Progressives Governors Forum (PGF), was present in the chamber when the letter was read.
The Imo senator based his communication on Section 68(1)(g) of the constitution.
“This decision is due to the intractable division and crisis in the Labour Party that sponsored the earlier election into the Nigerian Senate,” his letter reads.
“The communication is therefore made pursuant to Section 68(1g) of the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended.
“Imo state and the entirety of the south-east remain united under the leadership of our performing governor, his excellency, Hope Uzodimma.”
Also, member representing Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu, Kogi State in the House of Representatives, Arc. Salman Idris, has defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a letter addressed to the Speaker of the House, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, which was read on the floor of the Green Chamber, Arc. Salman stated that the decision followed careful consultations with key stakeholders in his Federal Constituency.
He noted that the move was also in response to calls from his constituents to align with the political party that best accommodates their collective values and principles.
The letter reads “I wish to formally notify The Rt. Honourable Speaker and respected colleagues due to the National Leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress.
I have resolved, after careful consideration and consultation with critical stakeholders, political associates, and constituents in Kabba-Bunu/ljumu Federal Constituency and Kogi State at large to move from The African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the All Progressive Congress (APC) with immediate effect.
