In a decisive move aimed at uncovering the perpetrators behind the looting of the Udenu Cashew Processing Factory, located in Obollo-Afor, the Executive Chairman of Udenu Local Government Council, Akachukwu Eze Akachukwu, has inaugurated a high-powered panel of inquiry. The newly constituted panel has been tasked with investigating the circumstances, individuals, and groups responsible for the theft of valuable equipment and installations from the factory, a key asset in the local economy.
The inauguration ceremony, which took place at the Udenu Local Government Secretariat, was attended by various stakeholders, including government officials, community leaders, and other prominent figures from the area. In his address, Chairman Akachukwu expressed his confidence in the ability of the panel to carry out a thorough and unbiased investigation. He emphasized that the committee’s findings would be critical in holding those accountable for the crime and in ensuring that justice is served.
“This panel has a crucial role to play in ensuring that the Udenu Cashew Processing Factory can continue to contribute to the local economy and provide employment opportunities for the people of this Local Government Area,” Chairman Akachukwu remarked during the inauguration. “The looting of such an important asset not only hampers the economic progress of Udenu but also undermines the collective effort to build a better and more prosperous community.”
The factory, which had been a beacon of hope for economic resurgence in the area, was looted few years ago. Valuable machinery, processing equipment, and installations were stripped from the facility, rendering it non-functional and significantly affecting the local cashew industry. The loss is believed to have caused substantial economic setbacks for the community, which relies heavily on the factory for livelihood and employment.
In his charge to the panel, Chairman Akachukwu handed over the terms of reference, stressing that the committee has one month to conclude its investigations and submit a comprehensive report. “Time is of the essence,” the chairman stated. “We cannot allow the perpetrators of this crime to go unpunished. The public deserves to know what happened, who was involved, and how such an incident was allowed to occur.”
The newly constituted panel is made up of individuals with diverse professional backgrounds, selected for their expertise, integrity, and capacity for impartiality. The panel is chaired by Barrister O. J. Uchenna, an accomplished legal professional with extensive experience in matters of public governance and justice. The Secretary of the panel is Barrister Chidiebere Nnamani, a well-respected legal expert with a strong track record in administrative and judicial roles. The panel also includes Rev. Fr. Jude Eze — the Parish Priest of St. Martin De Porres Parish Obollo, and Dean of Obollo Eke Catholic Deanary, Evelyn Ogbonna, and Cyril Okanya, former Vice Chairman of Udenu, all of whom bring diverse perspectives and insights to the investigation.
Upon receiving the charge, Barrister Uchenna, who spoke on behalf of the panel, expressed gratitude to Chairman Akachukwu for the opportunity to serve on such an important mission. “We are honored by the trust placed in us by the Chairman and the good people of Udenu. Our team is made up of individuals from diverse backgrounds with the requisite knowledge and experience to conduct a thorough and fair investigation,” he said. “We will leave no stone unturned in our quest to uncover the truth and bring justice to those affected by this unfortunate incident.”
Barrister Uchenna further commended the chairman for his leadership and the significant strides he has made within his first two months in office. “The Chairman’s swift action in addressing this matter shows his commitment to good governance and the welfare of the people,” Uchenna noted, referring to the chairmanship’s proactive stance on both economic development and community safety.
The establishment of the panel comes at a critical juncture for Udenu, as the community is still reeling from the impact of the looting incident. Over the years, local residents have expressed their frustration and anger at the theft, which they believe is part of a wider trend of insecurity and economic sabotage. There are calls for the government to take decisive action not only to investigate the specific crime at the Cashew Processing Factory but also to strengthen security measures in the area to prevent similar incidents in the future.
As part of the terms of reference, the panel is expected to conduct a thorough review of security protocols around the factory, identify the potential gaps that allowed the looting to take place, and make recommendations on how to safeguard the facility in the future.
The outcome of the panel’s investigation is eagerly awaited by the people of Udenu, who are hopeful that it will bring an end to the impunity that has plagued some sectors of the Area for years. Many hope that the findings will not only shed light on the perpetrators but also serve as a deterrent to future acts of criminality.
The Udenu Cashew Processing Factory is not just a symbol of economic opportunity but a source of livelihood for many families in the community. The chairman’s resolve to restore the factory to its full operational capacity is indicative of his commitment to ensuring sustainable development and prosperity for Udenu.
