Osinbajo faults CBN on cryptocurrency ban, calls for rethink

    Maduka University

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Friday faulted the decision of the Central Bank of Nigeria to prohibit deposit money banks, non-banking institutions and other financial institutions from facilitating trading and dealings in cryptocurrency.

Osinbajo said the monetary authorities should rethink their stand on the issue.

According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, the Vice-President stated this in his keynote address delivered virtually at an economic summit organised by the CBN, the Banker’s Committee, and the Vanguard Newspaper with the theme ‘Bankers’ Initiative for Economic Growth.’

Akande’s statement was titled ‘VP calls for cryptocurrency regulation: We must act with knowledge, not fear – Osinbajo.’

The CBN had earlier this month ordered banks and other financial institutions to close all cryptocurrency accounts with immediate effect.

The CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, had on Tuesday said the ban was in the best interest of Nigerian depositors and the country’s financial system.

Describing the operations of cryptocurrencies as dangerous and opaque, Emefiele told a joint Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions; ICT and Cybercrime; and Capital Market, that the use of cryptocurrency contravened an existing law.

But Osinbajo, who chairs the nation’s Economic Sustainability Committee, said while he fully appreciated the position of the regulatory bodies about possible abuses of cryptocurrencies, their position should be subjected to further reflection.

He said the CBN, the Securities and Exchange Commission and others should come up with a thoughtful and knowledge-based regulatory regime that addresses the concerns “without killing the goose that might lay the golden eggs.”

Osinbajo was quoted as saying, “There is a role for regulation here. And it is in the place of both our monetary authorities and SEC to provide a robust regulatory regime that addresses these serious concerns without killing the goose that might lay the golden eggs.

“So, it should be thoughtful and knowledge-based regulation, not prohibition. The point I am making is that some of the exciting developments we see call for prudence and care in adopting them, but we must act with knowledge and not fear.”

Osinbajo called on the monetary authorities to rethink their stand on cryptocurrencies.

He said, “There is no question that blockchain technology generally and cryptocurrencies, in particular, will in the coming years challenge traditional banking, including reserve (central) banking, in ways that we cannot yet imagine. So, we need to be prepared for that seismic shift. And it may come sooner than later.

“Already, remittance systems are being challenged. Blockchain technology will provide far cheaper options to the kind of fees being paid today for cross-border transfers.”

Osinbajo added, “I am sure you are all aware of the challenge that the traditional SWIFT system is facing from new systems like Ripple, which is based on the blockchain distributed ledger technology with its own crypto tokens.

“There are, of course, a whole range of digital assets spawned daily from blockchain technology. Decentralised finance, using smart contracts to create financial instruments, in place of central financial intermediaries such as banks or brokerages is set to challenge traditional finance.

“The likes of Nexo finance offer instant loans using cryptocurrency as collateral. Some reserve banks are investigating issuing their own digital currencies.”

Man castrates self to curb his libido

    Maduka University

A man has cut off parts of his genitals in Benue State to curb his insatiable appetite for female flesh, The Nation learnt.

Terhemen Anongo, popularly called Doc K or Bob Korna, said it was best to cast off what caused him to sin rather than end up in hell, as the bible enjoins.

A resident of Gboko, the Tiv heartland, Anongo said it was increasingly difficult to resist immorality in a society of pervasive nudity.

So he elected to emulate a certain ascetic monk who paid medics to surgically remove his genitals in order to focus better on his spiritual duties.

Anongo pulled out of University of Ibadan medical school in his final year in 2007 owing to psychiatric reasons and has been living alone in his father’s house, having chased out all other relatives who he accused of being behind his plight.

Gboko residents, however, see him as highly articulate, intelligent and well-behaved. Being jobless, Anongo transports traders’ articles in a wheelbarrow to make ends meet. He reads the bible and newspapers religiously.

After work, though, he dresses like a Taliban to attract attention and preaches, it was said .

But to put his sexual drive in check Anongo sought genital surgery from several professionals, all turning him down.

Being something of a medic himself, he took matters into his own hands, acquired the required tools and medications and proceeded to perform the surgery.

He snipped off the right testicle after dabbing the relevant parts with some local anaesthetics, and was determined to remove the left one as well when he was prevailed upon to stop due to excessive bleeding.

He walked to a medical facility where he was treated and discharged after a few days on their bed. Asked whether he would remove the remaining testicle after recuperating, Doc K said, “No, I won’t try it again.”

“Mr Igboho did not respond to our correspondent’s calls and text messages seeking full details of what played out.

But Femi Fani-Kayode, a former minister of aviation and ally of Mr Igboho, confirmed the incident.

He said Mr Igboho was going to meet an elder statesman , Ayo Adebanjo, when the attempted arrest occurred.

Mr Fani-Kayode shared a short clip of the scene.

I JUST SPOKE TO MY BROTHER SUNDAY IGBOHO. “I just spoke to my brother Sunday Igboho. He told me there was a violent attempt to arrest him this afternoon by a joint team of soldiers, DSS operatives & policemen numbering about 40 on the Ibadan/Lagos Expressway whilst he was on his way to see Baba Ayo Adebanjo in Lagos.

“I condemn this attempt to ambush & abduct him. It is not only reckless but also very dangerous. If the security agencies want to see him all they need to do is to invite him to their office. I am not aware of any crime that he has committed & I urge restraint on all sides.

“Let me also send a warning to the FG that Sunday Igboho is a hero to millions of Yorubas & either killing him or detaining him unlawfully would be the biggest mistake they could make. Building bridges, dialogue & peace is better than violence & war.A word is enough for the wise”, he wrote on Twitter.

  • FG takes over Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport in Kebbi

FG takes over Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport in Kebbi

    Maduka University

The Federal Government has taken over the Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport in Kebbi, Alhaji Abubakar Ladan, the state Commissioner for Works and Transport, has said.

Ladan who made the disclosure to newsmen on Thursday in Birnin Kebbi said the airport had not been sold to any private individual, contrary to rumour.

“There is no iota of truth in the rumour going around that the state government is planning to sell the Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport to a private individual.

“All the airports in the country are on the exclusive list. There is no way any state government can convert them as their own or sell them to individuals,’’ the commissioner said.

Ladan explained that the federal government had taken over 10 of such airports after their completion by state governments.

He said: “The airports include those of Ekiti, Gombe, Anambra, Nassarawa, Kebbi, Jigawa, Ebonyi, and Benue States, among others.

“I don’t know how the story came about that the airport (Sir Ahamdu Bello International Airport) had been sold.

“Who was it sold to? I want to use this occasion to tell you the true story of the airport.

“The aviation sector is in the exclusive list and any state that wants to construct an airport must get a clear approval from the federal government.

“So, once you construct the airport, you only have the manager, but the technical crew handling the airport is federal government’s staff and those of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

“You do not have the right to regulate the airport. We only agreed to allow the federal government to take over the airport because of management issues and other things.

“It is not the issue of sales; the federal government took over the airport of Kebbi State and we demanded that the amount we used to construct it be refunded to the state.’’

The commissioner said that President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the refund in March 2020.

According to him, the letter sent to the state said that the president had approved the refund of N16 billion to the state government, being the amount spent to construct the airport.

“The process of refunding the money is still on and as soon as the 2021 budget is implemented, the state government will be refunded,’’ Ladan added.
