Nicholas Prosper has been jailed for life for the murder of his mother, brother and sister.

A teenage triple killer who murdered his family and then planned to stage the deadliest school shooting in history has been jailed for a minimum of 49 years.

Nicholas Prosper, 19, illegally bought a shotgun and ammunition the day before shooting dead his mother, brother and sister at their home in Luton.

Two hours later he was arrested by passing officers who saw him behaving strangely and found him spattered with blood, and Prosper then led him to where he had stashed a shotgun and 33 cartridges.

Plans later found by police – described by investigators as “credible” – showed that he intended to go to his former school to kill 30 children, two teachers and himself, which would have become the deadliest ever school shooting.

At Luton Crown Court on Tuesday, Prosper was jailed for life with a minimum term of 49 years.

Judge Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb declined to impose a whole-life order, citing the fact his plan had been “thwarted”, his guilty pleas, and his age at the time of the offences.

She said the minimum sentence had to increase “very significantly” from the starting point of 30 years.

“However, you remain highly dangerous and it may be that you are never released,” she added.

She said the deaths of Juliana Falcon, Kyle Prosper and Giselle Prosper had “almost certainly” saved the lives of children at the school “and their memory should be honoured”.

The hearing had earlier been delayed as Prosper refused to come to court.

Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb told Prosper: “You intended to unleash disaster on the community of Luton. Your plans were intelligent, calculating and selfish.

“Your ambition was notoriety. You wanted to be known posthumously as the world’s most famous school shooter of the 21st century.

“The lives of your own mother and younger brother and sister were to be collateral damage on the way to fulfil your ambition.”

She said the facts of Prosper’s case were “chilling”, and that he had wanted to emulate and outdo the US school massacres at Sandy Hook in 2012 and Virginia Tech in 2007.

His case featured many “recurrent themes” seen in school shootings, she said, a young male perpetrator who chose a “uniform” for the killings, had a sexual interest in children, withdrew into an online world and showed a lack of empathy towards victims.

The teenager had an emotionless expression as he stood up and was escorted from the dock by an officer.

The court heard Prosper had been unable to stay in education or hold down a job, and had been planning to carry out a mass shooting at his old primary school driven by a desire for notoriety.

A forensic psychiatrist said he had “an extreme lack of empathy and remorse”, which were psychopathic tendencies.

Prosper managed to forge a gun licence and used it to buy a shotgun and 100 cartridges from a legitimate firearms dealer the day before the murders.

Speaking outside Luton Crown Court, Det Ch Insp Sam Khanna of Bedfordshire Police refused to say Prosper’s name as he paid tribute to the victims.

“In my entire policing career, which has included many years spent on the major crime team, I’ve never encountered anyone capable of such horrific acts, of showing no remorse,” he said.

“I’ve been utterly shocked and appalled by the actions and plans of the offender in this case, and I’m pleased that this truly evil individual will serve a significant proportion of his life behind bars.”

Senior Crown Prosecutor Shan Saunders said: “The case presented by the Crown Prosecution Service, supported by a detailed investigation by the police, laid bare the scale of his planning and the extent of his disturbing interest in mass murder.

“The evidence in this case was indisputable and, unable to defend his actions, he admitted to his crimes.

“It is beyond comprehension that a young man would want to kill those closest to him and target innocent young children. His clear lack of empathy and remorse is highly unusual and deeply concerning.
