Enugu Psychiatrist Hospital now family business, ‘CMD’s wife, siblings in-charge’

…CSO raises alarm, calls for police Investigation
Coalition of Civil Society Organizations has alleged rot, fraud and adminstrative rascality against the Chief Medical Ditector Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu Dr Monday Nwite Igwe.

Dr Monday Nwite Igwe, CMD
The alleged situation which includes victimization of some staff is reportedly threatening the peace in the hospital.
The appointment of fresh CMD was tactically made to end the lingering crisis in the hospital but unfortunately Dr Monday Nwite Igwe has rather made matters worse.
Leader of the Coalition Comrade Onyebuchi igboke told newsmen at a press briefing in Enugu recently that serious cisis that could lead to total breakdown is looming at the hospital “over abuse of office, corrupt practices, nepotism, tribalism and manifestation of obvious acts of a ‘power drunk’ man by the Medical Director of the hospital Dr Monday Nwite Igwe.”
Family business
It is alleged that Dr Monday Nwite Igwe aside super imposing his wife as the vice principal of the school has since his assumption of office as the MD engaged in nepotism and tribalism as he has flooded the hospital with his kinsmen and women from his home State of Ebonyi:
His wife Mrs Chinonye Igwe is said to be the de facto principal of the school.
“His sister Nurse Sussan Agi is the Head of Nursing Services and her four years senior in ranking Mrs Ruth Buzo-Maduka has been humiliated to work under her as a subordinate for the past one year.
“His brother Mr Friday Oduburu who is a staff of the hospital was contracted to manage the hospital canteen along with his wife.
“He now sells alcoholic drinks in the hospital canteen and he has also taken over the hospital photocopying machine in the library for his use in the canteen.
“Mr Friday Igwe who is the immediate brother to MD is now in-charge of the hospital hall and is contracting same out to outsiders for functions as well as mismanaging the proceeds generated from it without accountability.
“It is alleged that the Medical Director illegally employed one Miss Uju Nwodo, a level 8 staff (his alleged girl-friend) and made her seniors on level 13 to work under her. They are: 1. Dr Ogbonna Kalu-Nta 2. Mrs Judith Nwonye.
“The Medical Director in displaying his skills of planting seed of discord and divide and rule among the staff of the hospital has now forced the staff to belong to the unions and will go directly to their salaries/source to deduct the unions’ dues and share it with the various unions.
“These various unions as a way compensating him will give him awards thereby creating seeds of discord among the staff. The Medical Director is in violation of the fundamental rights of these staff to freedom of association guaranteed them under the constitution.
“The Medical Director by his action has violated the provision of section 12 (4) of the Trade Union Act which provides that membership of trade unions shall be voluntary and no employee shall be forced to join any or be victimized for refusing to join or remain a member. Also, by the provision of section 9 (6) of the labour act, no employer shall make a condition of employment that a worker shall or shall not join a trade union or shall not relinquish membership of a trade union.
“It is alleged that the Medical Director has assembled some able bodied men/staff as his hit squad and named them “CATCH AM” who he has saddled with handling of mentally challenged/ill patients without any form of training. They beat and abuse these patients and handcuff them in this process. He uses the squad to divert patients to his private clinic.”
The Coalition of CSO at the media parley held at the Enugu press centre urged the Inspector General to investigate these allegations.
They also availed the media with copies of the petition addressed to the Inspector General of Police.

Five Arrested By Police For Wearing ‘Tinubu Must Go’ T-Shirts

Five men have been arrested and arraigned before a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Maiduguri, Borno State, after police allegedly found them wearing T-shirts bearing the words “Tinubu Must Go.”
The defendants were identified as Baba Aji Gremami, 44; Mustapha Abba Yemen, 28; Abbacha Mohammed Ali, 32; Adam Umar Gubio, 21; and Abdulhamid Mohammed, 21.
According to a First Information Report issued by the State Criminal Investigation Department, the incident occurred on September 25, 2026, near West End Roundabout in Maiduguri.
Police charged the five men with criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, disturbance of public peace and thuggery under Sections 60, 78, 79 and 392 of the Borno State Penal Code.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges when they appeared before Chief Magistrate Court I in Maiduguri.
Their lawyer subsequently applied for bail. The court adjourned the matter until October 6, 2026, to rule on the bail application, while the substantive trial has been scheduled for October 26.
The case has drawn attention because the alleged conduct involved wearing clothing displaying a political message.
Amnesty International criticised the prosecution, describing the arrests as arbitrary and arguing that peaceful political expression is protected by fundamental human rights. The organisation called for the immediate release of the five men and urged authorities to discontinue the case.
Amnesty International also expressed concern that the prosecution could have implications for political expression and opposition activities in Borno State.
The case has generated reactions on social media, with some commentators questioning whether the display of political messages on clothing should constitute a criminal offence.
There have also been allegations that a prominent politician in Borno State may have influenced the arrests. The allegation has not been independently verified.
Efforts to obtain a comment from the Borno State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Kenneth Daso, were reportedly unsuccessful as of the time of filing.
The defendants remain subject to the court process, and the allegations against them have not been established in court.

The board’s Public Relations Officer, Dauda Hadejia, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday, September 26, 2026.

“So far, eight suspects have been arrested, while efforts are ongoing to arrest the remaining suspect,” Hadejia said.
