I killed Ataga alone, nobody assisted me, Chidinma confesses

    Maduka University

The Lagos High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square yesterday watched the chilling footage of Chidinma Ojukwu confessing to stabbing to death the Chief Executive Officer of SuperTV, Usifo Michael Ataga, all by herself.

It also viewed the grim footage of Ataga’s body recorded shortly after he was found in a Lagos short-let apartment apartment.

Miss Ojukwu, a 300-level, Mass Communication student of the University of Lagos, is the prime suspect in Ataga’s murder.

She is standing trial for the alleged offence alongside her sister and third defendant Chioma Egbuchu, and second defendant Adedapo Quadri.

They have been on trial since October 12, 2021, when they were arraigned at the high court before Justice Yetunde Adesanya.

According to the Lagos State Government which is prosecuting them, the alleged murder took place on June 15, 2021, at 19, Adewale Oshin Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

At the resumption of proceedings yesterday the prosecution played the video recording from a Compact Disc (CD) on a large screen in the courtroom.

It showed Ataga lying on the floor facing up with his hands spread open wearing a white singlet and boxers shorts stained with blood. His head was close to the wall and there was blood on the floor on his right hand side.

The video also showed Ojukwu narrating how she killed Ataga, during interrogation by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Olusegun Bamidele from the Intelligence and Tactical Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Panti, Yaba.

The defendant said she met Ataga through a friend and they started speaking to each other and that on June 13, 2021, he asked her to look for a place for them to stay, so she got the short-let apartment where they ate, drank, took drugs and where he was killed.

Ojukwu said, “After I got the place on Sunday, we were smoking Loud, drinking, watching movies, and then I went to get food. The drug we were taking got finished and I ordered another one and went downstairs to get it from the delivery guy in the morning; that was on June 14, 2021.

“Then on Tuesday, we drank and smoked Loud and I added Rophynol to his drink and we had sex. I was on the bed and he was on the chair. Then later he started disturbing me for more sex. I was tired and after struggling with him, he had his way and still wanted more.

“I thought he was no more interested in sex, only for him to return to the bed to ask for more sex. I pushed him away, which resulted in him hitting his head against a stool that had a glass. He had a cut on his leg and he became weak.

“I got a knife and stabbed him in the neck, ribs and stomach so that he would not be able to harm me. I tied his hands with handkerchief.

“His blood was out and I was scared. I just packed everything, my clothes were also stained with blood, I just packed my things and left.

“Michael (Ataga) was a friend, that we just talked, I didn’t know him that deep and we did not talk regularly.”

Asked in the video if she was assisted in killing Ataga, Ojukwu said, “There was nobody that assisted me, I did it alone.”

Herbalist killed in ‘evil forest, traditional ruler accused

    Maduka University
Family members of a 40-year-old man, Adebiyi Ogunyele, have accused the Onigua of Iggua, Oba Talabi Dosunmu, and some chiefs in the Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State of killing him.
It was gathered that Adebiyi, an herbalist, was alleged to have been possessed by a spirit known as Jemego.According to residents, it is believed that anyone possessed by the spirit is a danger to his community.

A youth leader in the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the deceased was accused of using the spirit to kill infants.

He said, “Adebiyi’s brother, Oladele, said a particular chief called him and said Adebiyi was possessed by Jemego and that he would be dealt with.

“The next day, September 16, 2022, we heard that some men from the chief’s compound arrested Adebiyi and he was taken to the chief’s house, where he was tied to a pillar and tortured.

“Later, he was taken to the palace of Oba Talabi Dosunmu, the Onigua of Iggua, where he was further beaten and tortured and tied to a pillar.

“Oba Dosunmu, after accusing Adebiyi of causing evil in the community which led to the death of children, ordered that he should be taken to the community’s evil forest known as Igbo Oro, where he was killed. His body was disposed of at the Omilende area of Igbogila in Yewa North, with a finger missing from his corpse.”

The victim’s wife, Yemisi Ogunyele, said she was with her husband and four children on the night he was taken by the chief’s bodyguards.

She said, “That day, it was around 7pm and my husband just returned from his farm when some men entered our house and demanded that my husband should follow them as he was wanted at the chief’s compound.

“When I did not see him come back, I went to the chief’s house and there I saw them beating him while accusing him of causing the death of infants with his Jemego powers.

“I begged them and cried, but they refused to stop. The next day, September 17, they took him to the Oba’s palace, where he was beaten and tortured again after which they took him to Igbo Oro, where they killed him.

“I was running around, calling family members to come and help us because women are barred from entering Igbo Oro.”

Adebiyi’s mother, Ibiyemi, said the monarch should be held responsible for her son’s death.

A relative, Adesina Alabi, said the case was reported at the Eggua Police Station.

Oba Dosunmu, when contacted, denied the allegations.

He said, “All these accusations against me over the death of Adebiyi, I know nothing about them. I did not order the killing of anyone. There was nothing of that sort.”

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, had directed the homicide section to handle the case.

He said, “The case was reported by the victim’s brother to the police at Eggua Police Station and since then we have not seen him. The CP has directed the homicide section to take charge of the case.

“Our men went to the palace and investigated, but the complainant was nowhere to be found for arrest to occur because we want more information from him.

“The absence of the complainant is what has stalled the progress of investigation by the police.

“It is rather unfortunate that the family of the deceased have gone ahead to bury the corpse when we have not conducted an autopsy. This is one of the troubling issues here.”

  • Oil theft: Tompolo uncovers 42 more tapping points in Delta, Bayelsa

Oil theft: Tompolo uncovers 42 more tapping points in Delta, Bayelsa

    Maduka University

OPOROZA— EX-MILITANT leader, Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, and security officials have uncovered 42 more tapping points by crude oil bunkerers on the nation’s oil pipelines in two states of Delta and Bayelsa, bringing the total to 58, yesterday.

The breakthrough came as bunkerers, angry with the leader of the defunct Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND, for exposing their unlawful business, in the past few weeks, have reportedly sent threat messages to him and operatives of his security firm, Tantita Security Services Limited, TSSL.

TSSL, last Thursday, seized a vessel suspected to belong to an oil syndicate, which came to load crude oil from an undisclosed location in Delta State.

However, Tompolo, who spoke to reporters, yesterday, at Oporoza, the traditional headquarters of Gbaramatu kingdom, Warri South-West Local Government Area, Delta State, dismissed the threat by the oil bunkerers.

At the time the Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, and the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited, NNPCL, Mele Kyari, visited Delta State, last Friday, Tantita reported the discovery of 16 tapping points on the trans-Forcados pipeline, which NNPCL had clamped.    Tompolo said: “As of today (Sunday), we have discovered over 58 tapping points that oil bunkerers have used in stealing crude oil from the nation’s pipelines in Delta and Bayelsa states.”

“In Delta, three major crude pipelines, including the trans-Escravos and Trans- Ramos lines have been tapped by oil bunkerers.

“The tapping points that were traced on Friday were with the help of the security agencies, which was why inside the rain and everything, we could trace the lines.

“We are doing the work together with the security agents; we are only providing intelligence for the security to assist to do the work.

Therefore, everybody, NNPCL, and security agencies are working together in a very good spirit .

“The military has helped us to discover and stop the people from doing illegal activities, so we are going to work together and we do not want to go into details. The stealing had been going on for over eight to nine years,” he said.

On the threat messages to his boys, he said: “As for threat messages, that is normal, even this morning, they sent messages to me, but I think it is something we can handle.”

The ex-militant leader, who sounded optimistic that they would soon curtail illegal oil bunkering, said: “With the way we are going now, we are getting cooperation from all the security agencies, both the ones in the state here and at the top. Therefore, by the grace of God, in no distant time, we will stop this largely.”

    No major challenge

He said his company is not facing any major challenge, adding: “At  every point in time, we will always provide the intelligence and security people will come and do the work.”

On the barricading of creeks by oil bunkerers with trees, he said: “That is the more reason we are involved, if we see any creek that is blocked with trees, we will bring in motor-saw to cut it and we go inside.

“Where the security people cannot even go, we will first go there and ask them to follow because we cannot do anything without the security people. In addition, with the way all of them are actually cooperating, we will achieve the desired result.

“The communities are not posing a problem, it is the bunkerers that offer resistance but even at that, like what I said before, this is our area, we are doing everything to ensure that we reduce oil bunkering to the barest minimum because the aquatic life in our area is almost gone.

“As for the crude oil that we recover from the creek, we are trying to get a barge where we will pump in the product.  Along the line, if any sinks, we will not follow that because the terrain is bad. However, we will do everything within our power to stop further destruction and pollution.

“There is no creek that anybody will pass in the region that I will not understand or the people working with me will not know. For now, we do not have any problem.

“Our major problem is that the aquatic life of the people is gone and we are doing everything together with traditional rulers, security agencies, Department of State Services, DSS, and others to ensure that we reduce it to the barest minimum so that our people can survive.”

Admitting that pipeline surveillance “is stressful,” he said there was no problem with the communities and that he is optimistic that oil bunkerers would  yield to his appeal to stop oil bunkering.

His words: “Before this time, I have been discussing with oil bunkerers, whether from Rivers or Bayelsa, all over the place. Even many of them actually understand that oil bunkering is not a good thing for our environment.

“And that is the more reason we think there will not be much problem for us to stop it, but their complaint is that there are no other means of survival.”

On the scarcity of kerosene, he said, “We are going to appeal to Federal Government and NNPCL to see what they can do about the local refinery, but you cannot fight illegality with illegality.”
