In the early hours of Friday, August 30, 2024, unknown gunmen attacked the Ogbaru Local Government Area headquarters, setting several buildings on fire and causing widespread destruction.
According to a resident who spoke to an Enugu-based online platform, Journalist101, under the condition of anonymity, the assailants stormed the premises, firing shots into the air before igniting parts of the council headquarters.
“This attack is one too many. We live in constant fear. This isn’t the first time our council headquarters has been targeted,” the resident lamented, calling on authorities to intervene and ensure the safety of the community.
Confirming the incident, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Anambra State Police Command, stated that police officers bravely confronted the attackers, preventing any loss of life, although significant damage was inflicted on the buildings.
“A joint security operation is currently underway in the area,” SP Tochukwu said, promising that “further developments will be communicated in due course.”
