The Nigeria Police Force in Enugu State has arrested a 24-year-old man, Ugwu Desmond, for the alleged rape and attempted murder of a pregnant woman in Affa community, Udi Local Government Area.
The incident, which occurred on the night of March 14, 2026, left the 30-year-old victim (name withheld) traumatised after what police described as a brutal and life-threatening attack.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, the victim had been returning home from a neighbour’s house along a quiet track road in Amokwo-Affa when she was suddenly attacked from behind.
The suspect, reportedly armed with a cutlass, overpowered the woman, forced her to the ground, and attempted to strangle her while covering her mouth to prevent her from raising alarm. He then dragged her into an uncompleted building where he threatened to kill her before raping her and inflicting injuries.
Despite the ordeal, the victim managed to report the incident to the police at about 6:15 a.m. on March 15, prompting swift action by operatives of the Affa Police Division who tracked and arrested the suspect.
Police said the victim was immediately taken to hospital for medical attention, while investigators processed the crime scene and recovered key evidence, including the cutlass allegedly used in the attack and clothing bearing suspected blood and seminal stains.
The suspect is said to have confessed to the crime.
The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, described the incident as “deeply disturbing and unacceptable,” assuring that a thorough investigation is underway and that the suspect will be charged to court upon conclusion.
He also urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly, stressing the importance of community cooperation in preventing crime.
Police authorities reiterated their commitment to ensuring justice for the victim and maintaining public safety across the state.
