Abakaliki, Ebonyi State – The father of former Ebonyi State Deputy Governor, Kelechi Igwe, Eze Francis Igwe, the traditional ruler of Ndufu-Alike community, has been abducted and killed, sparking outrage and grief across the state.
The monarch was reportedly kidnapped by gunmen on Sunday while on his way to church. Details surrounding the incident are still emerging.
Governor Francis Nwifuru led a condolence visit to the late monarch’s palace on Friday, canceling the scheduled State Executive Council meeting. He described the late Eze Igwe as “an accomplished elder statesman and courageous leader who served his people with dedication and commitment.” The governor urged security agencies to investigate the abduction thoroughly and assured that all those involved would be brought to justice.
Governor Nwifuru revealed that some suspects had already been arrested in connection with the crime. He prayed for the repose of the royal father’s soul and called on the family and the entire Ikwo Noyo clan to bear the loss with fortitude.
Responding on behalf of the family, Barr. Kelechi Igwe expressed gratitude for the support and commitment of the governor and security agencies during the search for his father. “Though our father is not here today to appreciate your efforts, his entire family will remain eternally grateful for the support shown,” he said.
However, tensions in the community escalated as an angry mob allegedly set ablaze one of the suspected perpetrators, a native of Alike Ikwo allegedly involved in the kidnapping. Authorities are working to restore calm and ensure justice is served.
