ENUGU — In a bid to prepare for the rollout of its Smart School initiative, the Enugu North Local Government Area, in collaboration with the Enugu State Government, has launched a four-day digital literacy training for verified teachers interested in teaching in the newly established smart schools across the council’s 13 political wards.

The training, aimed at equipping teachers with essential digital skills, is in preparation for the upcoming computer-based qualifying tests that will determine their eligibility for employment within the state’s technology-driven school system. This initiative aligns with Governor Peter Mbah’s broader educational reform agenda focused on experiential learning and digital innovation.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Council Chairman, Dr. Ibenaku Harford Onoh, described the training as a crucial step in building a digitally competent teaching workforce.

“We are not just preparing teachers; we are preparing 21st-century educators who can inspire innovation and critical thinking in the classroom,” Onoh said. “This digital literacy program will serve as the backbone of effective teaching and learning in the smart school system.”

He noted that the training is also a preparatory step ahead of the September 2025 launch of the Smart School Programme, giving participants early exposure to the digital tools and platforms necessary for modern classroom instruction.

Dr. Onoh praised Governor Mbah for initiating the Smart School project, calling it “a transformative move that will reshape the future of education in our state.” He also commended Dr. Mrs. Chinyere Onyishi, Special Adviser to the Governor on Experiential Learning, for her instrumental role in driving the initiative forward.

Encouraging the trainees to fully engage with the program, the chairman emphasized that the knowledge gained would not only boost their chances of being recruited but also position them as catalysts for change in their respective communities.

He reaffirmed the council’s unwavering support for the state’s educational reforms and pledged continued collaboration toward achieving sustainable development in the education sector across Enugu North LGA.
