In quick response to the Abakpa bridge threatened by erosion, Enugu State government has promptly begun repairs to save the bridge from possible collapse.
The state commissioner for Information Hon Chidi Aroh who visited the site Monday said “all our people are fully mobilised. It’s just part of the government commitment, that wherever there is emergency we respond.
“You can all see that this is an emergency created by the rain we are having. We had plenty of rain in the recent time. The accident is as a result of the rain but in the state government commitment, His Excellency ordered all our people including the contractor which we have given this job to do to move into the site yesterday, even though it was Sunday.
“Clearly, it is not about talk, it’s about doing as you can see that every action is being taken to be sure that this place is properly done.
‘His Excellency have received assurance from the ministry of works and infrastructure that in the shortest possible time, given all the engineering requirements, is going to restore this place in a very normal situation and our people will continue moving well.
“But in interim we plead with our people to exercise a whole lot of caution in the use of this road now there is some emergency as far as this repair is going on. There is need for caution in the use of this road.
“We need to ensure that when Keke uses here in the night that they are much more careful. Heavy duty Vehiicle sparely use here because they can make use of alternative route but if you see two heavy duty Vehicles here it will be difficult for another vehicle to manovre. But we assure residents that things are being done properly as the state government remains on top of the situation.”
The state commissioner for Works and infrastructure Engr. Greg Nnaji who was also on site Monday morning had assured that government would intervene soon.
He told our reporter, on Sunday, that an intergrity survey had been conducted on the bridge and result being evaluated.
He assured that work would commence on the bridge very soon.
The commissioner said his attention had been drawn to the bridge earlier than now and he went with a team of engineers to conduct intergrity test on the bridge and result of the assessment waa being evaluated.
He assured Enugu people that the bridge would not get to disaster as the intergrity of the bridge is still intact. He further assured that the erosion would not jeopardize the intergrity of the bridge.
All we are trying to do is to come out with a remediation on the embarkment and protection.
