Traditional stool tussle: Court stops Enugu community from holding New Yam Festival

An Enugu State High Court has ordered the Akama community in Ezeagu local government area of Enugu State to maintain status quo over the Igweship tussle in the community.

The court, which gave the ruling on August 17, 2022, said the order would subsist pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice for interlocutory injunction.

Justice Paul Ugwueze, who presided over the vacation court, specifically ordered all parties in the suit to refrain from conducting any activities within the powers of the traditional ruler of the community such as New Yam Festival, among others, pending the hearing and
determination of the motion on notice for interlocutory injunction in Suit No/A/29/2018 between the parties.

In the Suit No. E/433M/2022 between Chief Christian Akpata and Comrade Celestine Ukwuani, president general, Akama Town Union and Mr. Andi Chidi Samuel, secretary general, Akama Town Union (for themselves and on behalf of the Akama Town Union executive committee members), the court said, “That parties are hereby ordered to maintain the status quo and preserve the RES in this suit pending the hearing and determination of the substantive motion for interlocutory injunction in Suit No. A/29/2018 between High Chief Dr. OZO Christian Akpata v Comrade Celestine Ukwuani & anor pending at the Ezeagu Judicial Division”.
