An umbrella of all the youth organizations in Enugu, All Enugu Youth For Good Governance {AYGG} has advocated a consensus governorship candidate for the 2023 general election, saying it will maintain the existing peace in the state made available by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
The forum, which took the decision after her meeting held at Nike Lake Hotel, Enugu, unequivocally stated that it will be good for Ndi Enugu to adopt a consensus arrangement.
Addressing journalists at the end of the meeting alongside other members of the state executives of the organization, Coordinator of the group, Comrade Onyekachi Ugwu, maintained that the emergence of a consensus candidate will be for the interest of ndi Enugu.
Ugwu, popularly known as his “Excellency” said since Ugwuanyi has succeeded in making peace possible in the state, we cannot afford to renege on the rare gift.
His words “Ugwuanyi made Enugu peaceful and we cannot afford to renege on that rare gift. The emergence of a consensus arrangement will maintain the existing peace made possible by the governor. Consensus arrangement will not heat up the polity in Enugu State. We will pay courtesy visit to the all the governorship aspirants with a view to arriving at a consensus candidate”
He recalled that for over six years, Ugwuanyi has been making use of consensus in changing leadership in Enugu State, adding that this has led to zero violence and destroyed the winner takes all syndrome.
The group implored the aspirants to be ready to embrace and support whoever emerges as a consensus candidate, noting that over 20 aspirants in PDP have so far indicated interest despite the fact that only person will fly the flag of any political party.
Ugwu therefore pointed out that they were working hard to actualize a situation where all the aspirants would gladly rally round the would be candidate of any political party and work with him as a team.
The group maintained that any political party with the intention to win in the 2023 general elections must give 50% slot to the youths, adding that they were aware that most youths have indicated interest to contest the various positions in the election.
