Former Senate President and ex–Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Anyim Pius Anyim, has emerged as the leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) South-East Elders Forum.
His emergence follows consultations within the forum after the demise of former governor of old Abia State, Ogbonnaya Onu, who previously held the position.
The decision was reached at a meeting of the APC South-East Elders Forum held at Anyim’s residence in Ebonyi State. The forum said it carefully reviewed possible leaders within the geopolitical zone before unanimously agreeing that Anyim was best suited to lead the body.
In a resolution issued after the meeting, the forum stated:
“We, the members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Elders Forum, after due consultations and brainstorming, considered other possible standard bearers of the party in the geopolitical zone and found Senator Anyim Pius Anyim (GCON) well positioned and eminently qualified to serve as the overall leader of the Forum.”
The elders cited Anyim’s long record of public service and what they described as his positive contributions to the socio-economic and political development of the South-East as key factors behind their decision.
The forum also described him as a calm and experienced statesman capable of steering the party in the zone toward electoral success, particularly ahead of the next general election.
Anyim’s emergence comes shortly after President Bola Tinubu appointed him as National Vice Chairman of the APC National Convention, a move party stakeholders say reflects confidence in his leadership capacity.
Reaffirming their political stance, the APC South-East Elders Forum reiterated its support for President Tinubu’s re-election bid, describing it as “a done deal.”
“We have commenced the re-jigging of the political system to ensure that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is delivered in the coming general election,” the forum said, adding that the South-East geopolitical zone is solidly behind the president’s second-term aspiration.
