Ahead of this years Onitsha Ofala festival this week , the Obi of Onitsha Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe Agbogidi has gone into seclusion as part of the spiritual process before the occasion.
The seclusion by Agbogidi is explained as a process of communing with the spiritual word and the fore bearers of Onitsha kingdom to obtain their blessings.
According to a statement signed by Ozonmma Tony Nezieanya, a member of Media Lead, strategic marketing communication subcommittee stated that these sacred rituals are a vital part of Onitsha’s rich cultural heritage.
The Onitsha monarch’s seclusion from the public is known in Igbo language as ‘Inye Ukwu Na Nlo Eze Onicha ‘ (spiritual retreat of the monarch), shielding him from public view.
Among other early rituals are Owuwaji (yam festival) which kicks off the season of celebration and thanksgiving and Ogbalido (feast of atonement): a sacred ceremony marking the eve of the monarch’s emergence; the grand celebration
