    Herdsmen attack: Ebonyi hospitals littered with casualties

    Sunday’s attack by Fulani herdsmem on communities in Ado Local Government Area of Benue State left hospitals in Abakaliki overflowing with casualties.

    Although the attack was in Benue State, the communities are border towns sharing boundaries with Izzi people in Ebonyi.

    A resident in the area, Uchenna Okpokwu said the herdsmen invaded the area at about 3:am with guns and machetes.

    “They came into Ndiobasi village and started slaughtering the people. After slaughtering them, they entered Odoke, from that Odoke, they went to Obapta”.

    Comsequently, the Emergency and Accident Wards of the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital Abakaliki AEFUTHA 1.& 2 are overflowing with patients.

    Our sources confirmed that some of the casualties had parts of their bodies severed with machetes by the herdsmem.

    The Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team (AMURT) confirmed two children were killed while being taken to the hospital for treatment.

    It said it has scrambled a team to the area to help in treatment and evacuation of victims.

    Chairman of Ebonyi local government area, Chinyere Nwaogbaga confirmed the incident.

    She said she went to the area and helped to evacuate many of the residents from the area to hospital.

    “Yes, the communities are Izzi(a clan in Ebonyi) speaking communities but they are geographically located in Benue. Since they are indigenes of Ebonyi though located in Benue, the State governor directed we go and bring them to hospital and treat them and also give them relive materials”.

    She said more buses have been sent to the area by the local government, Ebonyi Speaker and the State Government to evacuate more victims.

    A man reported to have been dragged down from his black Mercedes Benz Jeep and shot dead have been identified.

    He is Justice Stanley Nnaji, former Judge in Enugu state.

    He was reportedly dismissed with Justice Egbo Egbo by NJC sometimes in 2004 or thereabout over judgment on Ngige. He is from Mbu, Isi-Uzo.

    The incident happened Sunday along Okpara Avenue by Ebeano Tunnel roundabout.

    Number of death is yet to be confirmed but EverydayNews can reliably inform that there was heavy shooting in Abakaliki between suspected IPOB members and the police.

    The shooting was reported in Nnodo in the Ebonyi Local Government Area of the State, a surbub of the Abakaliki capital.

    Cars and motorcycles were set ablaze as IPOB members who tried to enforce compliance attacked residents violating the sit-at-home order.

    In response, the police was reportedly mobilized leading to the shooting during which deaths were recorded.

    Ohanaeze Youths condemn Gulak murder in Imo… task police to go for the killers

    The Ohanaeze Youth Council, OYC, has expressed shock over the murder of Ahmed Gulak, a former political adviser to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

    OYC had learnt that Gulak was murdered by gunmen in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

    The police blamed bandits for the killing, while also disclosing that the deceased left his hotel enroute the Owerri airport without informing security agencies.

    Reacting via a statement by its President-General, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, the OYC called for caution in handling the incident.

    He said “the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide received with great shock the news of the brutal killing of Ahmed Gulak by yet to be identified gunmen. This is unimaginable considering that Ndigbo are not known for things as this.

    “To say the least, we are quite worried that security situation in Imo State has degenerated to such a terrible level. This is now time for retrospect and collaborative effort to end this breach in the Southeast.

    “We caution people against hasty comments while we urge the police to launch a thorough investigation to unravel the mysteries surrounding this unfortunate incident.

    “We are already seeing name callings and blames from various groups and security agencies. This is too hasty and could only be diversionary.

    “We sympathize with his family and the people of Adamawa State over this sad loss.”

    Also speaking on the sit-at-home declared by the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, Okwu called on security agencies not to kill innocent youths.

    He said “Igbos have the right to peacefully mourn their departed fellows and the police and other security agencies should not use it as opportunity to waste the lives of Ndigbo.”

    Meanwhile, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Ndatsu Aliyu, psc, has ordered the launch of a full-scale manhunt of yet-to-be idenitifed armed assailants.

    A police statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer PPRO ASP Daniel Ndukwe said the victim was alleged to have been trailed and shot dead along Ebeano Tunnel, Enugu, Saturday.

    The police said the victim was rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead by Doctors on duty and deposited in the mortuary for autopsy.

    The Commissioner, while assuring that no stone would be left unturned in fishing out perpetrators of the heinous crime, has called on residents of the State to remain law-abiding, vigilant and assist the Police with useful information that will lead to the arrest and prosecution of the assailants.

    The police in Imo State has confirmed the death of former presidential adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan, Ahmed Gulak.

    A press statement by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Bala Elkana, Sunday morning, said “armed bandits intercepted and attacked a Toyota Camry cab conveying Ahmed Gulak and two others to the Sam Mbakwe Airport.

    According to the statement, “Ahmed Gulak left his room at Protea Hotel without informing the Police nor sister agencies in view of the fragile security situation in the South East and Imo in particular.

    “He left without any security escorts and while the cab driver took irregular route to the airport, six armed bandits who rode in a Toyota Sienna intercepted, identified and shot at Ahmed Gulak at around Umueze Obiangwu in Ngor-Okpala Local Government Area close to the Airport”.

    The Imo Police PRO disclosed that investigation has commenced into the killing as Imo State Commissioner of Police Imo CP Abutu Yaro, “has directed a discreet investigation into the matter as Tactical and Special forces have been deployed to cordone the area and arrest perpetrators

    Breaking: Umuahia Police headquarters set on fire by unknown gunmen

    Gunmen on Saturday evening attacked the Abia State Police Criminal Investigation Department located at the Ugwunchara axis of Umuahia, the Abia State capital.
    Sources said that the gunmen arrived the SCID facility in a Toyota Sienna with some of the gunmen who were Stark naked and others dressed in black attire with red scarf carrying AK7.
    The sources said that the gunmen also came with the message that they will deal with anyone that disobeys the Monday May 30th sit-at-home order.
    The incident which was said to have occured about 5:30pm has forced many residents of both Umuagu in Umuahia North LGA and other parts of the state capital to desert the streets.
    While information about the attack is still sketchy, unconfirmed reports have it that the CID building was completely razed down with suspects in their custody set free.
    It was gathered that few officers on ground had attempted to repel the attackers who took the police unawares, but were overpowered as the gunmen not only came in their numbers, but had a superior weapon.
    By press time, no life is reported to have been lost in the attack.
    However, shop owners including pubs and other event centers and eateries in Umuahia have reportedly shutdown operation.
    Commercial and public transportation has been abruptly suspended with many travelers using the Ugwunchara axis to enter and exit the state capital.
    People who had traveled to the Abia North part of the State for social events were left stranded on the Uzuakoli-Ohafia road.
    Information has it that vehicular movement on Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway has been halted as people coming into Umuahia from Owerri and Aba axis of the Expressway are waiting for clearance before they can proceed into the capital.
    When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr Geoffrey Ogbonna, confirmed the incident.
    He said, “State CID Umuahia came under attack about an hour ago. Details not handy at the moment.”

    The National Industrial Court Enugu Division has awarded N10 million as damages to a carpenter Arinze Okeke, nine years after he was pushed down from the third floor by an expatriate.

    The carpenter was working for Arab Contractors during the construction of Enugu State Secretariate Complex in year 2013, during Gov. Sullivan Chime’s Administration.

    The artisan worker in a minor squabble, was pushed down from the 3rd floor of the construction site by a tempramental expatriate worker described as Engr Lateef Abdul.

    This unfortunate incident generated great confusion, upheaval and pandemonium at the construction site, as many thought, the young man who was pushed down had died.

    Consequently, workers of Arab Contractors OAO Nig Ltd at the Enugu State Secretariat construction site ran beserk, and riotous , resulting to the physical intervention of the then Commissioner of Police, Enugu Command and other government team, to quell the uprising.

    The artisan workers at the construction site embarked on many days strike, to protest what they termed high-handedness of their expatriate supervisor- Engr Lateef Abdul.

    Mr Okeke was rushed to Niger Foundation Hospital where he later regained consciousness and was admitted for weeks.

    The injured capenter approached human right and constitutional lawyer in Enugu State, Mr Ogochukwu Onyema of OAU Onyema & Co, and they instituted an action at National Industrial Court.

    The matter which lingered for nine years came to an end on 21/5/2021 when the trial judge appraised all the submissions of the learned counsels on both sides, and the stiff opposition held by the chambers of a renowned veteran lawyer Chief P.M.B. Onyia who vehemently opposed any award to Claimant.

    After painstakingly resolving the issues raised by the lawyers, the court still saw merit in the case of the capenter.

    In a virtual court judgement on 21/5/2021
    in Suit No NICN/EN/759/2014 Justice O. O. Arowosegbe held that the defendants owe the Claimant a duty of care which they failed to uphold.

    “That the life threatening injuries suffered by the Claimant was as a result of the breach of duty of care and negligent attitude of the defendants.

    “That the 2nd defendant committed a Tort of trespass to person specifically Civil Assault and Battery.’

    The court finally awarded a cost of litigation of 700,000 and General compensatory damages of N10,000,000:00 to the Claimant, Mr Arinze Okoke the capenter.

    A yet to be identified middle aged man suspected to be a suicide bomber at 11:30am this morning, Tuesday, 25h May 2021 opposite the campus 2 of Amaizu/Amangbala Primary school, in Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State blew himself up.

    A resident of the area who spoke to Leadership on grounds of anonymity said that on hearing the sound of the explosion, residents of the area scampered for safety.

    He said that the yet to be identified youngman was carrying explosive which exploded on his body killing him instantly

    He noted that after few minutes, the residents reconvened at the scene of the incident only to discover the suspected suicide bomber laying dead in the pull of his own blood.

    The resident who noted that the happened close to the Eke Market Afikpo which happens to be the biggest market in the area said that there is tension and panic in the community following the incident.

    According to the source, the suspected bomber was seen wondering within the area adding that I first came into a beer parlour and when the people inquired who he was, he left.

    He moved to the schools and the gate man asked him to go back and infront of the school as he made effort to remove his clothes, the explosive exploded.

    Efforts to get the reactions of the Police Public Relations Officer PPRO DSP Loverth Odah and the State Commissioner for Internal Security, Boarder Peace and Conflict Resolutions Chief Stanley Emegha proved abortive as several calls put across to them was not answered.

    At least four policemen were killed in Enugu when invading gunmen attacked a police station in Iwollo, Ezeagu local government area of the State.

    The attacked reportedly took place in the early hours of Tuesday, 25th May, 2021.

    The attack turned bloody as four policemen were allegedly killed by the hoodlums who stormed the station in a Siena car and a bus.

    The station was completely burnt down and the arms of the slain officers taken away.

    “The men shot sporadically and we couldn’t even sleep, as the gunshot persists, we started seeing heavy smokes. The attackers were there for more than 45 minutes if not one hour.

    “When we got to the station this morning, I could count up to four dead bodies on the floor and the entire station has been razed down. Their vehicles and motorcycles were destroyed, a villagers revealed.

    When contacted, ASP Daniel Ndukwe, the Enugu Command Public Relations Officer promised to get back to our correspondent when he gets the full details of the incident.

    Iwollo Oghe police station was commissioned in 2016 and was built by the members of the community.
