The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a suspected armed robber who allegedly disguised himself in a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) uniform in an attempt to evade security checks after robbing a victim at 9th Mile, Udi Local Government Area.

The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Chinecherem Ugwuagu, was apprehended by operatives attached to the Safer Highway Patrol on October 11, 2025, along the Enugu/Onitsha Expressway.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, items recovered from the suspect include a Carter motorcycle, an improvised gun-like object made from a body lotion container wrapped with cloth, clothes, a bank ATM card, and other stolen items.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Ugwuagu allegedly broke into a victim’s residence around 8:00 a.m. on the same day and used the imitation gun to threaten and dispossess the occupant of the recovered items.

He reportedly changed into an NYSC uniform to conceal his identity and avoid arrest while escaping the scene on the stolen motorcycle.

However, his plan failed when vigilant officers on patrol noticed suspicious behavior and intercepted him.

The Police spokesperson added that the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended the operatives for their swift and diligent action.

He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to maintaining security and combating crime in the state.

CP Giwa also urged residents to remain law-abiding and continue to support the Police with credible information that would enhance efforts toward ensuring peace and safety across Enugu
