Oyo abduction: Teachers begin strike as Tinubu sends 1,000 forest guards to rescue victims
He also directed a specialised security unit with advanced rescue capabilities to intensify efforts to free abducted pupils and teachers from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area.
This is as the Nigeria Union of Teachers declared an indefinite strike in Oyo State and announced plans for nationwide solidarity rallies to press the government for the rescue of the kidnapped pupils and teachers.
According to a statement signed Sunday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, a high-powered Federal Government delegation conveyed the presidential directives to community leaders and lawmakers during a visit to Esiele and Yawota communities in Oriire LGA on Sunday, May 31, 2026.
The delegation also informed leaders that their request for the establishment of a military base in the area had been transmitted to the President for consideration and approval.
The development comes 16 days after gunmen struck communities in the area and took dozens of schoolchildren and their teachers captive.
The delegation was led by the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, and included the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu; Defence Minister General Christopher Musa (retd); and Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, Onanuga said.
Addressing residents in both English and Yoruba, Gbajabiamila said the President’s decision to dispatch the nation’s top security leadership to the affected communities reflected his determination to deploy every available resource to secure the victims’ release.
“Mr President is deeply troubled by this incident. Whatever it takes, our children and teachers will be brought back home safely.
“He has issued all necessary directives and is providing every support required by our security agencies to achieve that objective,” Gbajabiamila said.
He also addressed the appeals from parents and community members urging caution in the rescue operation.
The Chief of Staff explained, “Mr President also saw the appeals from some parents and community members urging caution in the rescue efforts.
“Let me assure you that the operation will be intelligence-led and carefully coordinated, deploying both kinetic and non-kinetic measures to secure the safe return of the victims.
“Your pain and anxiety are understood. By the grace of God, your children will return safely to your arms.”
The delegation also called on the Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Ghandi Olaoye, at his palace to commiserate with the traditional ruler and his people.
They also held separate visits to the widow of the slain teacher, Mrs Mary Oyedokun, and her two children where Gbajabiamila delivered the President’s personal condolences to the family and promised that they would not be left to suffer.
The 1,000 forest guards approved by the President will be recruited in collaboration with the Oyo State Government, Onanuga revealed.
The abductions occurred on May 15, 2026, when armed men attacked three schools; Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School in the Esiele and Yawota communities of Oriire LGA, taking pupils and teachers captive.
During the attack, a mathematics teacher, Michael Oyedokun, was beheaded. A motorcyclist was also killed, and a security personnel died after running into improvised explosive devices planted by the abductors during early rescue attempts.
The Oriire LGA communities sit on the fringes of a forested belt that the abductors have exploited for cover since the attack.
Meanwhile, the National Security Adviser, Ribadu, said no stone would be left unturned.
“We share in your pains and agonies. The perpetrators of this dastardly act are evil.
“The kidnapping of a two-year-old infant is nothing but evil.
“The Federal Government will ensure that an end is brought to this inglorious act nationwide,” he said.
Defence Minister Musa echoed the President’s commitment on the forest guards and called on local communities to collaborate actively with security forces.
Musa said, “Like the Chief of Staff said, President Tinubu has approved the immediate recruitment of 1,000 forest rangers in Oyo. Other security requests by the people will be looked into.”
The Olugbon of Orile-Igbon, Oba Francis Alao, who earlier spoke on behalf of the community, linked the recurring abductions to the expansive forest reserves that armed groups continue to exploit as cover.
“The kidnappers are taking advantage of the vast forest reserve in the area to perpetrate evil. We need a military base in Oriire.
“Also, the government must do something about the mobile network service in the area,” the monarch said.
A two-year-old infant and a school principal are among the confirmed captives from the abductions.
Days after the attack, videos later emerged showing the abducted school principal and a teacher making emotional appeals to President Tinubu, Governor Seyi Makinde and Nigerians to help secure their release, with the captives indicating they were being held in harsh conditions and exposed to extreme weather.
On Saturday, Makinde had visited Ahoro Esiele and met with families of the victims at L.A. Basic School.
He appealed for understanding and urged communities not to trade blame between the state and federal governments.
Makinde told the gathering, “Don’t cry. I have come here because of you. You installed this government. I want to let you know that this government is responsible to you.
“By the grace of God and your cooperation, we will bring back our children and the teachers.
“This is not the time to start trading blame on who should be responsible for the release of these children between the state and federal government. This is just the time to come together to rescue our children and their teachers. I feel your pain, but have trust in us.”
The Governor said he had been holding security meetings twice daily since the abduction occurred and was working closely with security agencies to facilitate the victims’ safe return.
He commended the Western Security Network, Amotekun, whose operatives had lost lives in combating security challenges across the state.
Husband of the abducted school principal, Professor Wole Alamu, had also made appeals directly to Makinde as well as Mrs Funmilayo Ojo, whose daughter-in-law and four grandchildren are among the captives.
Mr Aliu Saidi, a relative of one of the victims, pleaded for the government to do everything possible to secure the return of their loved ones.
NUT declares strike
In a similar development, the Nigeria Union of Teachers on Sunday declared an indefinite strike of all primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State beginning Monday (today), June 1, 2026, citing the failure to secure the victims’ release despite repeated appeals.
The NUT directed teachers in public primary and secondary schools in the state to withdraw their services from today over the continued abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in the state.
In a circular jointly signed by NUT National President Audu Amba and Secretary-General Dr Clinton J. Ikpitibo, the union expressed deep concern over the “horrifying, inhumane and traumatic conditions” being endured by the victims in captivity.
“The National Leadership has directed all Primary and Secondary School teachers in Oyo State to withdraw their services from Monday, 1st June, 2026, until the abducted teachers and students are safely released,” the statement read.
The union said it was particularly disturbed by reports of killings among the captives, as well as the emotional video appeals made by the school principal and a teacher from inside their captors’ den.
It said the prolonged captivity, with no clear indication of imminent rescue, left it with no choice but to act.
The union further directed all its state chapters nationwide to organise solidarity rallies on Tuesday, June 2, terminating at various Government Houses across the country, where state leaderships of the NUT would address journalists on the need for improved protection of schools, teachers and learners.
The NUT pledged to continue pursuing all lawful means to secure the release of the victims and renewed its call on the Federal Government, Oyo State Government and security agencies to intensify efforts toward the immediate and unconditional release of all captives.
Senior police sources confirmed on Wednesday that operatives of the Force Intelligence Department–Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) are probing allegations of database misuse, cyber-related offences and the unauthorised disclosure of sensitive national documents belonging to INEC.
As part of the investigation, an INEC electoral officer, whose identity has not been disclosed, has been taken into custody, while Lere Olayinka, media aide to the FCT Minister, was questioned by investigators on Tuesday at the Police Headquarters in Abuja.

The probe followed a petition reportedly filed on behalf of INEC, alleging criminal conspiracy, cyber intimidation and the unlawful release of classified electoral records.
The controversy arose after Olayinka shared screenshots on social media purportedly showing details of a voter registration transfer involving Nollywood actor and politician, Emeka Ike, from Imo State to the Federal Capital Territory.
The post, which came amid questions surrounding Ike’s eligibility to contest a House of Representatives seat in the FCT following his criticism of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) primary process, triggered widespread reactions.

Many Nigerians questioned how the information was obtained, alleging that it could only have come from INEC’s restricted voter registration database.
Responding to the controversy on Tuesday, INEC denied reports of a breach or hacking of its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) database, insisting that the disclosure resulted from the misuse of legitimate internal access credentials by an authorised official.
Investigations revealed that the detained electoral officer allegedly initiated contact with Olayinka through Facebook Messenger before forwarding voter registration documents to him via WhatsApp.
The documents were reportedly intended to show that Emeka Ike’s voter transfer request had recently been initiated and had not yet received final approval.

During his interrogation, Olayinka reportedly told investigators that he had no prior relationship with the INEC official and was unaware that the documents shared with him were classified.
Sources said he maintained that the electoral officer did not indicate that the information was confidential or restricted.
Meanwhile, the Department of State Services (DSS) has also launched a parallel investigation into the circumstances surrounding the disclosure of the voter information.
Police authorities are said to be considering possible charges against both the INEC official and Olayinka, including criminal conspiracy, cyber-related offences, unlawful disclosure of classified information and actions capable of causing a breach of public peace.

The Enugu State Police Command has recorded another major breakthrough in its ongoing crackdown on violent crimes, foiling a kidnapping attempt and neutralising two suspected criminals in separate operations across the state.
Police spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed in a statement on Tuesday that the operations led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, a Beretta pistol, a locally fabricated double-barrelled pistol, 30 rounds of live ammunition, a live cartridge, mobile phones and other incriminating exhibits.
According to the statement, the first operation occurred on May 30, 2026, at about 8:30 p.m. following intelligence reports that a gang of about five armed men was attempting to kidnap a resident along the Nowas–Abakpa Road axis in Enugu.
Operatives attached to the Trans-Ekulu Division, working alongside members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group, swiftly responded to the distress call and engaged the suspects in a gun duel after the criminals reportedly opened fire on the security team.
One of the suspects was fatally wounded during the exchange and later confirmed dead at a hospital, while other members of the gang escaped with suspected gunshot injuries.
Items recovered from the neutralised suspect included an AK-47 rifle, two magazines loaded with 30 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition and two mobile phones. Subsequent intelligence-led operations by the Anti-Kidnapping Sub-Unit of the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) also led to the recovery of a Beretta pistol linked to the gang.
In a separate incident later that same day at about 9:19 p.m., police operatives attached to the Amechi-Idodo Division responded to reports of an armed robbery attack at a residence in Owo Community, Nkanu East Local Government Area.
The suspects were said to have invaded the home of a male resident and dispossessed him of personal belongings before police and members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group arrived at the scene.
Upon sighting the operatives, the robbers allegedly opened fire, prompting a gun battle during which one of the suspects was neutralised. Other gang members fled with suspected gunshot wounds.
Security operatives recovered a locally made double-barrelled pistol loaded with one live cartridge from the deceased suspect.
The Command said efforts have been intensified to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects, while investigations into both incidents continue.
Commending the operatives and members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group for their courage and professionalism, the Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
He also urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies to strengthen security and public safety across the state.

Their vehicle was ambushed along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli Road in Matazu Local Government Area by gunmen, who, according to witnesses, emerged from hiding, blocked the road and opened fire on the vehicle, forcing it to a halt before abducting the retired officer and his wife into a nearby forest.
The road, according to residents of the area, is unsafe due to repeated bandit attacks.
A senior local government official in Batsari, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to security concerns, confirmed to Daily Trust that he personally spoke with the abducted officer during the conversation facilitated by the bandit leader.Northern Nigeria Events
“I spoke with Major General Rabe through Kachallah Muhammad. He told us that he is hale and hearty and that his wife is also fine,” the official said.
According to the source, the retired general assured his family and associates that they are being adequately taken care of by their captors, a development that has somewhat eased anxiety among relatives and residents of the area.
The official further disclosed that during the interaction, Kachallah Muhammad made his demands clear, insisting on the release of his relatives, allegedly being held by Nigerian security authorities.
“He said what he wants is the immediate release of his relatives in government custody,” the official added.
The bandit leader, the source said, also expressed willingness to return to negotiations, indicating openness to dialogue aimed at restoring peace in Matazu and other areas under his influence.
“He said he is ready to go back to the negotiation table to achieve peace in Matazu and neighbouring communities,” the official said.
Family, residents express concern
Relatives and residents of Batsari have expressed deep concern over the abduction of the retired senior military officer, describing the incident as a devastating blow to both his family and the community that has benefited from his years of service and philanthropy.
A family member, Mariya Ibrahim, said the retired general, whom she described as the family’s breadwinner, was travelling to Katsina for a wedding with his wife when they were abducted.
“He served this country with dedication and deserves protection even in retirement. We want him and his wife rescued unharmed,” she said.
A resident, Ibrahim Mamman Batsari, said: “If a retired senior military officer can be kidnapped, then ordinary citizens are even more vulnerable. Government must rise to its responsibility.”
Another relative, Aisha Abubakar Batsari, described the retired officer as the pillar of the extended family and appealed for his safe rescue.
Residents noted that the general had remained actively involved in community development projects in Batsari.
A community leader, Haruna Mai Maganin Kwari Batsari, said the retired officer was expected in the town on the day of the incident to discuss community matters.
Security expert, Abubakar Ibrahim, said the incident reflects a dangerous escalation of insecurity in Katsina State, warning that criminal groups appear to be growing bolder.
“The kidnapping of a retired Major General shows how emboldened bandits have become. It exposes the vulnerability of major highways and rural communities. If urgent and decisive action is not taken, the situation could further deteriorate.”
The protest coincided with demonstrations in Oyo and Ogun states, where residents, civil society groups and labour activists demanded the immediate release of the abductees.
On May 15, 2026, armed men attacked three schools-Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School in the Esiele and Yawota communities of Oriire LGA, taking pupils and teachers captive.
The abduction had since generated outcries across the country.
Academic activities were suspended in public schools across the 33 local government areas of Oyo State following the NUT directive.
Also, there was total compliance in Ogbomoso and Ibarapa axis of the state.
In Ogbomoso, some protesters took to the streets to demand the immediate rescue of the abducted schoolchildren and teachers.
A visibly distraught woman, wearing a pink hijab, broke down in tears as she pleaded for the release of the victims, lamenting that her children were among those kidnapped.
The woman said, “Please, have mercy on me. The children have a bright future. Government, please help us and intervene in this matter. I have cried and cried.
“Where will I start from? The children are my tomorrow. They are my hope. Please, help me. May you also not weep over your children.”
Also, another protester, Ajibola Aboderin said, “We are here to express our grievances, but in a peaceful manner. We feel the pain of the abducted teachers, students and their families, almost 18 days after the incident.
Ogun residents protest
In neighbouring Ogun State, residents of Abeokuta also took to the streets to protest the abduction and worsening insecurity across the country.
The protesters carried placards bearing messages including ‘Bring Back Our School Children,’ ‘Stop Kidnapping, Banditry,’ and ‘End Terrorism in Nigeria.’
Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Juwon Owolabi, said residents now lived in fear due to rising insecurity.
He urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts to secure the release of the abducted pupils and teachers.
“This is a time when the parents and everyone are grieving. We cannot continue like this. We sleep with anxiety and panic, and we trust that the government has the capacity and what it takes to end this insecurity now.
Teachers across the federation are expected to converge on state government secretariats on Tuesday (today) in a nationwide protest demanding the unconditional release of teachers and learners abducted in Oyo State and other parts of the country.
The simultaneous rallies, scheduled to hold in all 36 state capitals, are being organised by the Nigeria Union of Teachers in response to the growing wave of kidnappings targeting schools and education workers.
The action follows a directive from the national leadership of the NUT contained in a circular dated May 29, 2026, and signed by the union’s president, Audu Amba, and secretary, Clinton Ikpitibo.
The circular mandated all state chapters to stage solidarity rallies to draw attention to the worsening insecurity affecting schools.
In Lagos, teachers are expected to assemble at Ikeja Bus Stop before marching to Alausa Secretariat, while their counterparts in Oyo State will converge on the state secretariat of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Ibadan.
Mobilisation gathered momentum on Monday as placards, banners and flyers arrived at NUT secretariats across the country.
The placards bore messages, including “Stop the Kidnapping of Teachers and Students Now,” “Schools Must Be Safe Havens, Not Crime Scenes,” and “Protect Teachers, Protect the Future.”

Two police officers were killed when gunmen ambushed security operatives attached to the Chief of Staff to Anambra State Governor, Chief Ben Nwankwo, along the Amansea-Ufuma Road on Sunday night.
The attack occurred at about 8:30 p.m. as Nwankwo was returning to Awka after representing Governor Charles Soludo at an official function. Several civilians were also reportedly caught in the attack, with casualties recorded.
The Chief of Staff, however, escaped unhurt, thanks to the swift response of his official driver who maneuvered the vehicle out of danger.
In reaction to the incident, Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to tactical and investigative units of the command to apprehend those responsible for the attack.
Speaking after an emergency meeting with heads of formations across the state, Orutugu directed officers of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Anti-Robbery Squad, and Anti-Violent Crime Unit to intensify efforts and bring the perpetrators to justice.
He described the attack as a heinous act and assured residents that the command was committed to restoring security and tracking down the assailants within the stipulated timeframe.
The police commissioner also warned members of the public to remain vigilant, noting that criminal elements have increasingly resorted to disguising themselves in police and military uniforms while carrying out attacks.
According to him, motorists and commuters using the Amansea-Ufuma Road should exercise caution, as the route has become notorious for criminal activities in recent times.
Orutugu reassured Ndi Anambra that the police remain battle-ready to protect lives and property, expressing confidence that significant breakthroughs would be achieved in the ongoing manhunt within the next 48 hours.
