Political parties in Anambra North Senatorial District, under the umbrella of the Anambra North Coalition, have endorsed former Minister of Transport, Prince John Emeka, for the 2027 senatorial election.
The coalition also passed a vote of no confidence on past and present lawmakers representing the district, accusing them of being completely disconnected from the people.
Speaking to reporters in Onitsha on Saturday, the coalition’s spokesperson, Mrs. Chioma Okwuosa, lamented what she described as the absence of purposeful and effective representation in the district over the years, calling for a change in leadership.
“We challenge those who have represented us in the past and those currently in office to show evidence of what they have attracted to our senatorial district,” she said.
Okwuosa further decried the lack of support for residents during recurring flooding in the area, noting that many farmers suffered heavy losses without any intervention from their representatives.
“During the perennial flooding in Anambra North, many farmers lost their livelihoods, yet no effort was made to assist them. We are predominantly agriculturists and business people. There are intervention opportunities through agricultural and industrial banks which other senators have leveraged to support their constituents, but our own representatives have failed to do so,” she added.
She, however, expressed confidence in Prince John Emeka’s track record, stating that his past achievements in public service had positively impacted the socio-economic lives of the people.
“We know what Prince John Emeka achieved while in government, and those efforts had multiplier effects on the lives of our people,” she said.
The coalition called on Emeka to formally declare his intention to contest, assuring him of their full support.
“We are calling on Prince John Emeka to come out and contest. We are solidly behind him and confident that he will emerge victorious,” Okwuosa stated.
The coalition recalled that it had earlier approached Emeka last year to contest for the position, to which he responded that he would consider the request.
When contacted, Prince John Emeka said the decision ultimately rests with the people of Anambra North, noting that the growing calls for him to contest reflect the confidence they still have in him.
“At the appropriate time, I will make my intentions known,” he said.
