Ebonyi State government have confirmed the arrest of the suspected agent who was seen in a viral video extorting money from petty traders at the State International market Abakaliki at the weekend.
In a statement signed by the Special Assistant to the State Governor on New Media, Mt. Leo Ekene Oketa and made available to journalists said the suspected agent will will be prosecuted according to law.
“I can confirm to you, that the Nigerian Police Force, Abakaliki, were alerted yesterday when the issue came up and they have arrested the ‘agent.’ I am sure he will be prosecuted according to Law
“On several occasions, the Governor of Ebonyi State Rt. Hon Francis Nwifuru has openly stated that petty traders of perishable goods in Ebonyi State should not be taxed.
“Particularly on March 20, 2024, while swearing in Members of Ebonyi State Revenue Appeal Commission, the Governor cautioned against indiscriminate taxation of the less privileged persons, selling their farm produce in our local markets.
“Unfortunately today, a video is making rounds on social media about an unknown person who is seen in the video, going against the Executive Order of the Governor by taxing sellers of perishable goods – vegetables and tomatoes at International Market.
He maintained that the agent seen in the viral video does not represent the State Government. “Let me categorically state, that the agent seen in the video does not represent the Government of Ebonyi State in any shape or form.
Mr. Oketa stated that the activities of the agent is not known to the State Government, “as a matter of fact, his dealings are in stark contrast to the Executive Order of the Governor.
“The general public is hereby informed that the Government of Ebonyi State stands vehemently against taxing of perishable goods sellers in our local markets. Anyone indulging in such, is engaging in a criminal activity and will be treated as such. Ends.
