The people of Obunagu-Obeagu, Awkunanaw in Enugu South Local Government Area has vowed to resist perceived attempts to hijack large portions of its an ancestral land.
In a petition to the Enugu State Government through the Ministry of Lands, the community alleged receiving information suggesting registration and issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy of the Isuoffia Agu-Eke and Agu-Ezinne lands (Lakeside Layouts, phase I and II) to the Ugwuafor Autonomous Community, Akpugo in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.
‘We wish to register our protest against same, if the information on the rounds bear any form of truth.’
“We therefore wish to state thus:
“That our Isuoffia Agu-Eke and Agu-Ezinne lands now christened as Lakeside Layout, Phase I and II were parcels inherited from our fore-parents.
“That in exercising their rights of ownership over the said lands, our fore-parents obtained a judgement from, as far as the Supreme Court in E/14/1948, declaring Nnaji Nwa-ogaba, our progenitor, as the rightful owner of the vast area of land.
“A Copy of the Supreme Court judgement is herewith attached for ease of reference.
“That any attempts at any registrations and /or issuance of Certificate of Occupancy over any portions of our ancestral land will not only be in contravention of the Supreme Court Judgement, but will be resisted by all means lawful.
“That we are not unaware of the government’s efforts at maintaining the fragile peace in our area and it is therefore our belief, if the information on the purported registration and issuance of Certificate of occupancy over our ancestral lands pans out, that the government may have been misled, by individuals with certain sinister objectives, hence this communication to provide information to the contrary.”
