Tension is rising again in Obeagu Community, Enugu South Local Government Area, as residents cry out over what they describe as the “unjust arrest” of an innocent woman allegedly framed in connection with a murder case between Obeagu Awkunanaw company and some alleged land grabbers.

According to multiple community sources, the woman—widely known as a caregiver and mother who helps the sick and elderly—was arrested by police officers in the wake of clashes following the killing of an Obeagu youth, Onyedika Chukwu Ede.

The incident, which has deepened existing tension between Obeagu and these individuals, took a shocking twist when the woman was allegedly “roped in” and accused of complicity in the death of a suspected assailant linked to the rival group.

Eyewitnesses said the suspect, one of the armed men who attacked Obeagu, was caught by locals after the brutal murder of their kinsman. He was reportedly beaten before police intervened and took him away, only for news to later emerge that he had died in custody.

Not long after, police operatives stormed Obeagu and began arresting residents—including the woman, who villagers insisted on having no involvement in the altercation.

“She’s a mother and caregiver who only minds her home,” said a neighbour tearfully. “She knows nothing about the fight between the two parties. How can someone who was nursing children at home suddenly be accused of murder?”

Another resident described the arrest as part of a “larger plot” to silence Obeagu people and intimidate them into surrendering their ancestral land.

“This woman was arrested simply because of her interest in the welfare of Obeagu people,” he said. “She was roped into a murder case she knows nothing about. The real killers are walking free, yet the police prefer to harass innocent people.”

A community spokesperson expressed deep frustration, accusing the police of bias and complicity.

“The police have refused to investigate the real crime—the murder of our son,” he said. “Instead, they are protecting the attackers and turning against the victims. Our people are being punished for demanding justice.”

Residents of Obeagu now fear that the woman’s arrest is meant to break their resolve in the ongoing land dispute with the land grabbers.

“This is beyond injustice,” the spokesperson added. “They are trying to destroy our community’s spirit by arresting mothers, widows, and innocent people. We only ask for fairness and the freedom of our innocent sister.”

As night falls on Obeagu, the community remains enveloped in grief and disbelief. Their plea echoes across the land:
“Free our innocent mother and bring justice to our slain son. We are tired of suffering for crimes we did not commit.
