Operatives of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in Bayelsa State led by Comptroller Sunday James have apprehended 644 undocumented immigrants in the state.
The NIS said the special operation ‘Saukan Shaho’, meaning ‘The Eagle has landed‘, was sanctioned by the Comptroller-General, Isah Jere Idris, and supported by Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri.
The service said the operation led to the arrest of 44 Nigeriens, 35 Togolese, 20 Beninese and six Ghanaians, among others.
James said yesterday in Yenagoa that the operation followed the laid-down ECOWAS protocols and United Nations rules of engagement and respect for human rights.
He said the operation however led to the proper documentation of immigrants and migrants in the state with 89 expired travel documents renewed by the arrested illegal immigrants.
