Government activities were literarily brought to a halt in most government ministries, agencies and departments on Monday in Enugu State as government appointees deserted their offices to attend to their personal issues.
It was gathered that the appointees’ absence from offices came as Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi travelled to Lagos State to attend the southern governors meeting.
Our reporter who visited most of the Ministries including the Universal Basic Education, amongst others, noticed that the appointees were yet to report to office by 1.3pm.
The appointees, it was learned, took the advantage of the fact that the governor was not in the state and decided to attend to their personal matters.
EverydayNews gathered that most of the visitors, who visited the state secretariat and other government offices for various matters were disappointed as there were no appointees to attend to their problems.
Some civil servants, who spoke with our reporter on the condition of anonymity, said, most of the appointees were always looking for opportunities to absent from offices.
“So, any day the governor is not around, they always, go to their own businesses, leaving their work unattended to. Most times, they behave like people who have no work schedules.
“Most visitors like you, who came here today, didn’t know that the governor is out of the state. Any day you want to see whoever you want in government, make sure you come on a day you are sure the governor is in town. You know Gburugburu doesn’t always travel and his presence in the state instills discipline, commitment and sense of responsibility on all these commissioners”, a civil servant said.
