A report from the state Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) has stated that 178 rape cases were recorded from January to August, 2021 in Jigawa State.

It stated that from January 2021 to August, the state recorded 178 rape cases which superceded the 137 cases recorded in the previous year across the state.

In view of this, the Jigawa State Government says it is working to ensure that all the rapists are prosecuted in order to reduce the increasing rate of rape in the state.

State Deputy Governor, Malam Umar Namadi disclosed this at a one-day public policy dialogue to improve basic health services in Jigawa organized by partnership to engage, reform and learn PERL, held at Manpower development institute, Dutse.

He said the state government is disturbed over the increasing rape cases recorded on a daily basis across the state.

Namadi explained that in order to address the challenges, the state government had recently signed the person prohibition act prescribing the life imprisonment or death sentence to whoever was convicted.

He said the case of rape is an issue that must be proven beyond reasonable doubt before the court.

Namadi said the major problems the state is facing is to prove the cases before the court because of the parents’ attitude in tampering with the evidence before reporting the case to police.

He said the state government will increase its funding in order to address the challenges and reduce the hardship of the affected victims.

He said the state government will create additional SARC in each of the three senatorial districts of the state.

He therefore urged parents and caregivers to always report the case to the nearest security agencies before tampering with evidence for discrete action.
