Enugu’s blind Commonwealth gold medalist wants just a walking stick from Govt

Mr. Steven Ogboo from Nome, Nkanu East LGA of Enugu State has become blind years after he was abandoned by the federal government.

He won a gold medal in in boxing at the 1974 Commonwealth games in Australia.

He defeated a boxer from New Zealand via a second round knockout.

He said, “It was during the time of Hen Yakubu Gowon; they kept me at Dodan Barracks and gave me food and drinks. Nothing else from government.

“They later sent me to Ondo as a coach and after about 9 months they retired me”

He also won gold in boxing at the 1975 National Sports Festival.

He said he had applied severally for help to no avail.
“If government can provide a walking stick; they say there is a certain walking stick they give to blind people, I will be alright.

“Also in my village they are terrorizing me. They say that I am an outcast and cannot stay with them.”
